Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Plan

I read the sentence again.

And again.

My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

The wife.

Not Emily.

Not a person.

An obstacle.

A problem to remove.

I looked at Daniel.

“Who wrote this?””

He stared at the note.

“I don’t know.””

The answer came too quickly.

Too smoothly.

I handed it to the attorney.

“Find out.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Emily, you’re going too far.””

I turned toward him.

“Too far?””

My voice was quiet.

“That’s what you say when someone discovers the truth.””

He stepped closer.

“I made mistakes. I admit that.””

“You admit stealing?””

“I borrowed money.””

“You admit hiding the ring?””

“I was trying to help.””

“You admit making fake documents?””

His silence returned.

That silence had become his confession.

The attorney collected the note.

“We should leave immediately.””

I nodded.

But before I could move, Chloe spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked exhausted.

“I need to tell Emily something else.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“No.””

Chloe ignored him.

“Daniel wasn’t just helping Marcus.””

She swallowed.

“He was helping my mother.””

My heart stopped.

“Eleanor?””

Chloe nodded.

“My mother knew about the money.””

The pieces started connecting.

Eleanor’s cruelty.

The accusation.

The public humiliation.

The way Daniel stood there and watched.

“You all planned this?””

Chloe shook her head.

“I didn’t know they would accuse you.””

“But you knew something was happening.””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

The betrayal felt heavier than the dress tearing.

Because Chloe wasn’t a stranger.

She was family.

“You let them destroy me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Of him.””

The room went silent.

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Don’t do this.””

Chloe stood.

“You told me Marcus would disappear after the insurance money came through.””

I felt dizzy.

Insurance money.

This wasn’t just about my account.

They had planned something bigger.

“What insurance money?””

Nobody answered.

The attorney looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to know if you have any life insurance policies.””

I stared.

“Yes.””

My voice barely came out.

“My father set one up when I was younger.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The reaction was enough.

I stepped away from him.

“No.””

He opened his eyes.

“Emily—”

“No.””

The word came from somewhere deeper.

“You knew.””

He shook his head.

“Not like that.””

“Then like what?””

He ran his hand through his hair.

“I knew about the policy.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

The room spun.

Months.

Not days.

Not one bad decision.

Months.

The attorney looked furious.

“This changes everything.””

Daniel suddenly looked desperate.

“Emily, please.””

I looked at him.

For years, I had waited for him to choose me.

Tonight, I finally understood.

He had already chosen.

Just not me.

The security officer returned.

“Mrs. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“There is someone downstairs asking to see you.””

“Who?””

The officer hesitated.

“He says his name is Marcus Vale.””

Daniel went completely still.

“No.””

Everyone turned toward him.

His reaction was immediate.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

The officer continued.

“He says he needs to speak with you before the police arrive.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Why would Marcus want to talk to me?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

May you like

Chloe whispered:

“Because he knows the part of the story Daniel hasn’t told you.””
