Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Marcus Vale

The name followed me out of the ballroom.

Marcus Vale.

I had never heard it before.

But Daniel reacted like I had just spoken the name of a ghost.

The venue staff moved me into a private room away from the guests. A woman brought me water and a blanket, but I barely noticed.

My hands were still shaking.

Not from the dress.

Not from Chloe.

Not even from Eleanor.

It was Daniel.

The man who had promised to stand beside me.

The man who watched me get humiliated.

The man who had taken money meant for our child.

The door opened.

Daniel walked in alone.

“Can we talk?””

I looked at him.

“Are you here to apologize?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation told me enough.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary, Daniel.””

I held up my phone.

“Taking seventy-five thousand dollars from me is a decision.””

He rubbed his face.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“Then explain it.””

He sat down.

For the first time all night, he looked exhausted.

“Marcus was supposed to help us.””

“Who is he?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

He looked at the floor.

“My old business partner.””

I felt a chill.

“Old?””

“He had financial problems.””

“And you gave him my money?””

“I was going to replace it.””

“With what?””

Silence.

I stood slowly.

“Were you ever going to tell me?””

He looked up.

“I was protecting you.””

I laughed quietly.

“Protecting me?””

I pointed toward the torn dress.

“Is that what protection looks like?””

His jaw tightened.

“You’re making me the villain.””

“No, Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“You’re finally showing me who you are.””

Before he could respond, my father’s attorney entered the room.

Daniel immediately stood.

“Attorney?””

The man placed a folder on the table.

“Mrs. Carter, your father requested I bring these documents personally.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What documents?””

The attorney opened the folder.

“Evidence of financial transfers, account access records, and communications between Mr. Carter and Marcus Vale.””

Daniel went completely still.

I looked at the papers.

There were emails.

Messages.

Promises.

And then I saw the date.

The first transfer happened two weeks before Daniel proposed to me.

My heart sank.

This wasn’t a desperate mistake after marriage.

This was planned.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

He stepped forward.

“Emily, listen—”

I pulled back.

“How long?””

He said nothing.

“How long did you know you were going to use me?””

His eyes filled with frustration.

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it?””

The attorney quietly placed one final document in front of me.

A contract.

My name was printed at the bottom.

But I had never signed it.

My blood ran cold.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked at the paper.

And for the first time, he looked truly terrified.

“Emily…”

The door opened.

Chloe stood there.

Her wedding makeup was ruined.

Her confidence was gone.

“We need to talk.””

I looked at her.

“About the ring?””

She swallowed.

“No.””

A strange silence filled the room.

“About why my grandmother’s ring was in Daniel’s car.””

Nobody moved.

I stared at my husband.

Daniel looked at Chloe.

And Chloe whispered:

“Tell her the truth before your father does.””

I looked down at the fake contract.

Then at the man I had trusted.

May you like

And I realized the missing diamond ring was never the biggest secret that night.

The biggest secret was what Daniel had been willing to destroy to keep hidden.
