Chapter 9: The Recording That Changed Everything
Nobody wanted to press play.
That was the strange thing.
After everything we had discovered, after years of lies and hidden documents, a simple video file felt more terrifying than any accusation.
Because everyone knew.
Some truths couldn’t be undone.
Daniel connected the phone to the television screen in the study.
The room darkened.
My mother sat beside me.
Jonathan stood behind us.
Richard was nowhere to be found.
That bothered me.
The video began.
Static.
A timestamp.
Twenty-five years earlier.
Then a voice.
My grandfather.
“Amelia, if you’re watching this, something has happened.””
My breath caught.
My mother grabbed my hand.
The recording showed an office.
The same office we stood inside now.
My grandfather sat behind the desk, looking tired.
But clear.
“I discovered what Richard has done.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Hearing his grandfather’s voice seemed to hurt him.
The recording continued.
“He believes he can take everything from this family.””
A younger Richard appeared on screen.
My blood went cold.
He looked younger.
But the anger in his eyes was exactly the same.
“You’re making a mistake,” young Richard said.
Grandfather shook his head.
“No. I made the mistake of trusting you.””
Richard stepped closer.
“You’ll ruin this family.””
“No,” Grandfather replied.
“You already did.””
The video shook slightly.
Then came a sound.
A crash.
Everyone in the room froze.
My mother covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
Grandfather’s voice became weaker.
“Amelia… take the documents…”
Richard’s voice was closer now.
“You don’t understand.””
The screen flickered.
Then my grandfather said the words nobody expected.
“Jonathan and Amelia’s child will inherit everything.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at me.
My heart pounded.
Even twenty-five years ago…
My grandfather had known.
Richard knew.
Everyone knew.
Except me.
The recording continued.
Richard’s voice became angry.
“You can’t do this.””
Grandfather responded:
“She is my granddaughter.””
A pause.
“My blood.””
The screen suddenly went black.
Everyone gasped.
Then another clip started.
Different camera angle.
Different location.
Richard was standing with a lawyer.
The lawyer looked nervous.
“What do you want me to do?””
Richard placed papers on a table.
“Change the will.””
The lawyer hesitated.
“That would be illegal.””
Richard leaned closer.
“Then make sure nobody finds out.””
My stomach turned.
Daniel whispered:
“He changed Grandpa’s will.””
Jonathan nodded slowly.
“And he erased Clara.””
The video ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the door opened.
Richard walked in.
Clapping slowly.
Everyone turned.
He smiled.
“Congratulations.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You knew.””
Richard looked at the screen.
“Yes.””
My anger burned.
“You knew my grandfather wanted me to inherit.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
Richard stepped closer.
“But you still don’t understand.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Your grandfather didn’t know everything.””
Jonathan moved forward.
“Richard.””
“No.””
Richard pointed at me.
“She deserves the truth.””
My mother stood.
“Don’t.””
Richard ignored her.
“Your grandfather believed you were the only heir.””
He smiled.
“But he was wrong.””
The room went cold.
Daniel frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard looked at the locket around my neck.
“That necklace contains a secret Amelia never told anyone.””
My fingers closed around it.
“What secret?””
Richard took out an old document.
A document I had never seen.
“The truth about your birth.””
Jonathan stepped forward.
“Where did you get that?””
Richard smiled.
“From the person who knew before all of us.””
My mother’s face went pale.
“Who?””
Richard looked directly at her.
“Your mother.””
My breath stopped.
“My grandmother?””
Richard nodded.
“She knew Clara’s real identity.””
Nobody moved.
Then Richard said the words that shattered everything:
“Clara Rose Sterling was never just Amelia’s daughter.””
He looked at me.
“She was the last person standing between me and the company.””
A pause.
“And that’s because she wasn’t supposed to inherit Sterling Holdings.””
He opened the document.
“She was supposed to inherit something much bigger.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What?””
Richard smiled.
“The entire Sterling empire.””
And behind him, someone quietly entered the room.

Someone carrying another file.
Someone who had been missing for twenty-five years.
