Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Buried Alive
The man standing beside my mother looked like someone who had walked out of a memory.
His hair was gray now. Deep lines marked his face. But I recognized the kindness in his eyes before I even understood why.
Daniel recognized him too.
“Dad…”
Richard Sterling looked like all the strength had been pulled out of his body.
“No.””
The word came out as a whisper.
The stranger stepped forward.
“Hello, Richard.””
The room went silent.
I looked between them.
Daniel’s face had gone completely pale.
“Who is he?””
Nobody answered.
My mother looked at me with tears running down her cheeks.
“Clara, this is Thomas.””
The man nodded.
“Thomas Hale.””
Daniel stared at him.
“That’s impossible.””
Thomas gave a sad smile.
“I know.””
Richard grabbed the edge of the table.
“You’re supposed to be dead.””
The sentence hung in the air.
My stomach twisted.
Dead.
That word had followed me my entire life.
My mother.
My childhood.
And now this man.
Daniel stepped between his father and Thomas.
“What is going on?””
Thomas opened the folder in his hands.
“Twenty-five years ago, Richard Sterling tried to erase two people.””
He looked at me.
“Your mother.””
Then at himself.
“And me.””
My mother reached for my hand.
Her fingers trembled.
“I wanted to come back.””
I looked at her.
“Then why didn’t you?””
The question came out sharper than I intended.
Her face broke.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
She looked toward Richard.
“Him.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“You’re still blaming me?””
My mother’s expression changed.
“You threatened to take my daughter away.””
The room became colder.
I felt Daniel’s hand touch my shoulder.
“Clara…”
I couldn’t look at him.
Because suddenly my entire life felt like a lie.
My mother had not abandoned me.
She had been running.
And someone had made her run.
Thomas placed the folder on the table.
“Inside are the original documents from twenty-five years ago.””
Daniel opened it.
His eyes moved quickly across the pages.
“What are these?””
“Evidence,” Thomas said.
“Evidence of what?””
Thomas looked at Richard.
“That Amelia Rose was the rightful heir to half of Sterling Holdings.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“She was unstable.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Her voice was quiet.
But powerful.
“You spent years telling everyone I was crazy because I discovered what you were doing.””
Daniel looked at his father.
“What was he doing?””
Richard said nothing.
Thomas answered.
“Your grandfather built Sterling Holdings honestly. But Richard changed everything after he took control.””
He placed another document on the table.
“Illegal transfers.””
Daniel picked it up.
His expression changed.
“These signatures…”
“They’re fake,” Thomas said.
I looked at Richard.
“Did you steal from your own family?””
Richard slammed his hand down.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Thomas smiled sadly.
“I know exactly what happened.””
He opened another document.
“And I know why Victoria tried to frame Clara.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel turned.
“Victoria?””
Thomas nodded.
“She found out Clara was connected to Amelia.””
My chest tightened.
“She knew who I was?””
Thomas looked at me.
“She knew enough to be afraid.””
Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.
He looked at the screen.
Victoria.
He answered immediately.
“Where are you?””
At first, there was only silence.
Then Victoria’s voice came through.
“Daniel…”
She sounded terrified.
“I didn’t know everything.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you do?””
A shaky breath.
“Mom told me to scare Clara away.””
My heart dropped.
“Victoria,” Daniel said, “you framed my fiancée.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
Another silence.
Then she whispered:
“Because I found the old letter.””
Daniel stood still.
“What letter?””
Victoria’s voice cracked.
“The one from your grandfather.””
Nobody moved.
“What did it say?”” Daniel asked.
Her answer came quietly.
“It said Clara was never supposed to marry into this family.””
I felt a chill.
Daniel looked at me.
“Why?””
Victoria swallowed.
“Because she wasn’t supposed to join the Sterlings.””
A pause.
“She was supposed to replace them.””
The call ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Thomas slowly turned toward me.
“Clara, there is something else you need to know.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
His eyes dropped to the locket around my neck.
“That necklace wasn’t just a gift from your mother.””
He took a breath.
“It was a key.””
My fingers closed around the silver pendant.
“A key to what?””
May you like
Thomas looked toward the locked study at the end of the hallway.
“The truth Richard buried inside this house.””
