Chapter 12: Beneath Sterling Tower

Sterling Tower had always been the symbol of the family.

A hundred floors of glass and steel rising above the city.

A monument to wealth.

A place where everyone saw success.

Nobody saw the secrets underneath.

Daniel drove us there before sunrise.

No reporters.

No employees.

No security announcements.

Just the five of us.

Me.

Daniel.

My parents.

And Evelyn.

Richard stayed behind.

But I knew he wouldn’t stay away forever.

“He’ll come,” Daniel said quietly.

I looked out the window.

“I know.””

“You’re scared?””

I thought about it.

“Yes.””

He reached over and took my hand.

“Me too.””

I looked at him.

That surprised me.

“You?””

He smiled sadly.

“I spent my whole life believing my family was perfect.””

A pause.

“Finding out it wasn’t hurts.””

I squeezed his hand.

“Thank you.””

“For what?””

“For believing me.””

He looked at me.

“I never stopped.””

When we arrived at Sterling Tower, Thomas was already waiting.

He looked older than yesterday.

Like the weight of the past had finally caught up with him.

“The basement levels were sealed after your grandfather died,” he explained.

Evelyn nodded.

“Richard wanted them gone.””

Daniel looked at the building.

“So what are we looking for?””

Thomas pointed downward.

“The truth.””

The old elevator required a special key.

The same symbol as my locket.

I stared.

“You knew?””

Thomas nodded.

“Your grandfather designed this system himself.””

The elevator descended.

Floor after floor.

Until the numbers stopped.

B-5.

The doors opened.

A hidden room waited behind them.

Inside were shelves.

Boxes.

Hard drives.

Photos.

Everything Richard tried to erase.

I walked slowly through the room.

My entire life was stored here.

A file with my name.

A photograph of my mother pregnant.

A letter from my grandfather.

Daniel opened another box.

“Clara.””

I turned.

He held a small envelope.

It had my name written on it.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My grandfather’s handwriting.

Dear Clara,

If you are reading this, then Richard failed to hide the truth forever.

You are the last Sterling heir.

But more importantly…

You are the person your mother trusted to bring this family back.

I looked up.

“The family back?””

Daniel kept reading.

The final line was underlined.

Do not trust anyone who tells you power is the reason you were chosen.

Your mother chose you because you were the only person who could end the cycle.

I felt a chill.

Then a sound echoed.

Footsteps.

Everyone turned.

Richard stood at the entrance.

Holding a gun.

Nobody moved.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Dad.””

Richard looked around the room.

“All of this.””

His voice cracked.

“All these years.””

He looked at me.

“And you still found it.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

His eyes filled with anger.

“Because your grandfather chose you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I held up the letter.

“He chose the truth.””

Richard laughed.

“You think truth wins?””

He looked around the room.

“Truth destroys people.””

Jonathan stepped forward.

“You destroyed people.””

Richard’s hand tightened.

Then he looked at me.

“I wanted you gone because I knew what would happen.””

“What?””

His expression changed.

“You would find out who really betrayed your mother.””

Everyone froze.

My mother whispered:

“What are you talking about?””

Richard smiled.

A terrible, broken smile.

“Ask Evelyn.””

The room went silent.

Slowly…

Every person turned toward her.

Evelyn’s face lost all color.

Daniel stared.

“Evelyn?””

Richard lowered the weapon slightly.

“Tell them.””

Nobody breathed.

“Tell Clara who gave me the information about Amelia.””

Evelyn looked at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

May you like

And then she whispered the words that changed everything.

“It was me.””
