Chapter 11: The Truth About Amelia Rose

Nobody moved after the recording ended.

The silence was unbearable.

My mother looked at Richard like she was seeing him for the first time.

“What did you mean?””

Richard didn’t answer.

“Richard.””

Her voice shook.

“What did you mean about my death?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You knew something happened to Amelia.””

Richard remained silent.

Jonathan’s face turned pale.

“You told me she ran away.””

Richard looked at him.

“She did.””

“No.””

Jonathan’s voice broke.

“You made me believe she left me.””

My mother’s hands trembled.

“You made everyone believe I abandoned my daughter.””

Richard finally looked at us.

“You don’t understand.””

I almost laughed.

That sentence.

Always that sentence.

“You’re right,” I said.

“I don’t understand.””

I stepped closer.

“So explain.””

Richard looked at me.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

His expression changed.

For a second, I saw something almost like regret.

Then it disappeared.

“Your mother was going to expose me.””

My mother shook her head.

“No. I was going to stop you.””

Richard continued.

“She had evidence.””

“What evidence?”” Daniel asked.

Richard looked at the floor.

“The kind that could destroy everything.””

Evelyn spoke quietly.

“The financial records.””

Richard looked at her.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

She held his gaze.

“And I knew Amelia planned to release them publicly.””

My mother’s voice cracked.

“So you stopped me.””

Richard said nothing.

Jonathan moved toward him.

“What did you do?””

The room became still.

Richard looked at the floor.

“I tried to take the documents.””

My stomach tightened.

“And?””

He didn’t answer.

My mother stepped closer.

“And?””

Richard finally whispered:

“She fought back.””

The air disappeared from the room.

Daniel grabbed the table.

“What happened?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“There was an accident.””

“No.””

Jonathan’s voice was filled with rage.

“You don’t get to call it that.””

Richard looked at him.

“She fell.””

My mother covered her mouth.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

All my life, I had imagined my mother leaving.

I imagined her choosing another life.

But the truth was worse.

She had been taken from me.

Or almost.

“Did you think I was dead?””

My mother’s question shocked everyone.

Richard looked at her.

“You disappeared.””

“No.””

She stepped forward.

“You thought you had killed me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard looked at Thomas.

“You helped her.””

Thomas nodded.

“I found her.””

My mother looked at me.

“After the accident, Thomas rescued me.””

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“Why didn’t you come back?””

Her face broke.

“Because Richard made sure I couldn’t.””

She pointed at him.

“He told me if I returned, he would destroy you.””

My hands shook.

“He threatened my life?””

“No.””

My mother looked at me.

“He threatened yours.””

Daniel immediately took my hand.

I squeezed it.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I needed to feel something real.

Evelyn opened the folder again.

“There is more.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pulled out another document.

“After the accident, Richard changed more than the will.””

She handed it to Daniel.

“What is this?””

“The adoption record.””

My heart stopped.

Daniel read it.

Then looked at me.

“What?””

He couldn’t speak.

I took the paper.

The words blurred.

But one sentence was clear.

LEGAL IDENTITY ALTERATION REQUEST.

My name.

My birth information.

Everything had been changed.

My mother whispered:

“He tried to erase you completely.””

I looked at Richard.

“How?””

His face was empty.

“You were a child.””

That answer made me sick.

“You changed a child’s identity.””

“I protected you.””

“No.””

My voice was stronger than I expected.

“You protected yourself.””

For the first time, Richard had nothing to say.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A voice came through.

A man.

“Daniel Sterling?””

“Yes.””

“I have information about Clara’s identity.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Who is this?””

The man paused.

Then said:

“Someone who worked for Richard twenty-five years ago.””

Everyone froze.

The man continued.

“I know where the original records are.””

Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.

“Where?””

A pause.

“Buried beneath Sterling Tower.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

The man’s voice became quieter.

“Because Richard didn’t just hide Clara’s identity.””

A pause.

“He hid the reason her mother was targeted.””

The call ended.

Daniel looked at all of us.

Then at the old locket around my neck.

And I suddenly understood.

May you like

The locket wasn’t the secret.

It was the map.
