Chapter 6: The Name Hidden in Blood

The name on the torn document stayed in my mind all night.

I couldn’t sleep.

I couldn’t eat.

I couldn’t stop hearing Daniel’s voice.

“Your father…”

One word.

One unfinished sentence.

And suddenly my entire identity felt like another secret someone else had controlled.

I sat alone in the guest room, holding my mother’s old photograph.

She found me there just before sunrise.

She knocked softly.

“Can I come in?””

For a moment, I wanted to say no.

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to ask why everyone had protected secrets instead of protecting me.

But when I looked at her face, I saw something I had never seen before.

Pain.

Not guilt.

Pain.

I nodded.

She sat beside me.

“I know you hate me right now.””

“I don’t hate you.””

Her eyes filled.

“But you left.””

She looked down.

“I did.””

“Why?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Because Richard gave me a choice.””

I looked at her.

“What choice?””

“He said I could disappear forever…”

She swallowed.

“Or he would make sure you disappeared with me.””

My heart broke.

“You believed him?””

“I was twenty-one years old. I had no money. No power. And I was fighting a man who controlled lawyers, police, and newspapers.””

She touched my locket.

“I hid the only thing I could.””

“The locket?””

She nodded.

“Inside it was proof.””

I frowned.

“What proof?””

She looked toward the window.

“The truth about your father.””

Before I could ask more, the door opened.

Daniel stood there.

His expression was exhausted.

“I found something.””

He entered carrying a folder.

My mother immediately stood.

“What did you find?””

Daniel looked at me.

“The missing page from the document.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

“In Victoria’s room.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“She knew.””

Daniel nodded.

“She found the page before the gala.””

I opened the folder.

Inside was the missing piece.

The handwriting was old.

The ink had faded.

But the words were clear.

I read the first line.

“Amelia Rose and Jonathan Sterling…”

I stopped.

Daniel watched me carefully.

Jonathan.

The name felt familiar.

My mother whispered:

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You know him.””

Her face went pale.

“He was Richard’s younger brother.””

The room spun.

Daniel sat down slowly.

“My uncle.””

I stared at the page.

My father was a Sterling.

Not by marriage.

By blood.

My mother continued.

“Jonathan was the only person who helped me expose Richard.””

“What happened to him?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel said quietly:

“Dad told everyone he died overseas.””

My mother looked away.

“He didn’t.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Where is he?””

The door downstairs suddenly slammed.

A voice echoed through the mansion.

“Clara.””

Everyone froze.

Richard.

Daniel immediately moved in front of me.

But Richard wasn’t alone.

He held a small box.

An old wooden box.

“I think it’s time you know the final truth.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Richard, don’t.””

He ignored her.

“I spent twenty-five years protecting this family from destruction.””

He looked at me.

“But you were always the biggest threat.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“Put the box down.””

Richard opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of my father.

Alive.

Standing beside Richard.

And beside them was a young Victoria.

My breath caught.

Richard placed the photo on the table.

“Your father didn’t die.””

I stared at the image.

“Where is he?””

Richard smiled sadly.

A smile that made my skin crawl.

“Closer than you think.””

Then he turned toward the doorway.

And the man standing there made everyone in the room stop breathing.

Because I knew his face.

I had seen it before.

In my dreams.

In my mother’s memories.

May you like

And in the photograph.

My father had finally come home.
