Chapter 5: The Room Nobody Entered
The Sterling mansion had one room everyone avoided.
I had noticed it during every visit.
A dark wooden door at the end of the west hallway.
No family photos nearby.
No decorations.
No explanation.
When I asked Daniel about it months ago, he had simply said:
“Some things in this house are better left alone.””
Now I stood in front of that same door with my mother beside me.
And for the first time, Daniel didn’t tell me to walk away.
Thomas held the old locket in his hand.
“The key is inside.””
I frowned.
“How?””
He pointed to the tiny engraving on the back.
A symbol I had seen my entire life.
A small rose surrounded by a circle.
“My mother told me it was just decoration.””
Thomas shook his head.
“Your mother protected that symbol because it belonged to her family.””
He pressed the locket against a hidden slot beneath the door handle.
A click echoed through the hallway.
Everyone froze.
The door opened.
Inside was not a bedroom.
Not an office.
A hidden archive.
Shelves covered every wall.
Old files.
Photographs.
Letters.
Boxes filled with documents.
Daniel whispered:
“What is this?””
Thomas walked inside.
“This is where Richard kept everything he wanted forgotten.””
My mother touched the edge of a shelf.
“I thought he destroyed it.””
Richard stood behind us.
His face was filled with anger.
“You had no right to come in here.””
Daniel turned.
“No right?””
He held up a file.
“This is our family history.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Give that to me.””
“No.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a stack of letters.
The first one was addressed to Amelia.
My mother covered her mouth.
“She wrote these?””
Thomas nodded.
“Your grandfather sent them before he died.””
Daniel read silently.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
I moved closer.
“What does it say?””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“It says Grandpa knew.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Knew what?””
Daniel held up the letter.
“That you were stealing company money.””
The silence was brutal.
Richard laughed.
“Your grandfather was old and confused.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“He wasn’t.””
He handed me another page.
My hands shook as I read it.
The letter was from my grandfather.
To my mother.
Amelia.
He wrote that if anything happened to him, she needed to protect her child.
Me.
My eyes blurred.
“He knew about me.””
My mother nodded through tears.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked away.
“Because Richard threatened everyone who tried to help me.””
Daniel looked furious.
“You let me grow up believing Clara’s mother abandoned her.””
Richard’s voice became cold.
“I protected this family.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You destroyed it.””
Suddenly, a folder fell from the top shelf.
Thomas picked it up.
His expression changed.
“What is it?””
Nobody answered.
He opened it.
Inside were medical records.
Old ones.
Very old.
He read the name.
Then looked at me.
“Clara…”
My heart started racing.
“What?””
He slowly handed me the paper.
At the top was my name.
But underneath it was a sentence that made my hands go numb.
“Biological parentage confirmed.””
I looked at my mother.
She looked terrified.
Daniel took the document.
His eyes scanned the page.
Then he looked at Richard.
“No.””
Richard said nothing.
Daniel’s voice became a whisper.
“You knew?””
I stared at the paper.
There was a second name listed.
Not my mother.
Not the man I had always assumed was my father.
Someone else.
Someone connected to the Sterling family.
Daniel looked at me.
“Clara…”
I couldn’t breathe.
“Who is it?””
Before he answered, Richard suddenly grabbed the document from his hand and tore it in half.
Everyone shouted.
But it was too late.
Richard stepped backward.
“You were never supposed to find this.””
Thomas stared at him.
“Now they know enough.””
Richard looked at me.
And for the first time…
He looked afraid.
Because whatever was written on that paper was worse than the inheritance.
Worse than the stolen company.
Worse than the lies.
Daniel picked up the torn pieces.
May you like
And whispered the name he could still read.
“Your father…”
