Chapter 7: The Father I Never Knew
The man standing in the doorway didn’t look like the villain I had imagined.
That almost made it worse.
For twenty-six years, I had carried a blank space where my father should have been. I imagined him as a stranger who didn’t care. A man who walked away without looking back.
But the person standing in front of me looked like someone who had spent decades carrying pain.
His eyes found mine.
And immediately, they filled with tears.
“Clara.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“Jonathan…”
The name left her lips like a prayer.
Daniel looked between them.
“This isn’t possible.””
Jonathan Sterling stepped into the room slowly.
“I know what you were told.””
Richard laughed quietly.
“Everyone knows what happened.””
Jonathan looked at him.
“No, Richard. Everyone knows the story you created.””
The tension in the room became unbearable.
I stared at the man who was my father.
“You’re alive.””
He nodded.
“I am.””
“Then why?””
My voice cracked.
“Why did you let me grow up without you?””
The question seemed to hurt him more than any accusation could.
He lowered his eyes.
“Because I thought disappearing was the only way to keep you safe.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone says that.””
My mother reached for me.
“Clara…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“I’m tired of hearing people say they left me because they loved me.””
The room went silent.
Jonathan closed his eyes.
“You’re right.””
That answer surprised me.
He didn’t defend himself.
He didn’t make excuses.
“I failed you.””
My anger didn’t disappear.
But something inside me softened.
Because for the first time, someone admitted the damage they caused.
Daniel looked at Richard.
“Tell me you didn’t fake his death.””
Richard remained silent.
That silence said everything.
Jonathan walked toward the table and picked up the old photograph.
“Twenty-five years ago, I discovered what Richard was doing.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Be careful.””
Jonathan ignored him.
“He was moving company funds into private accounts. He was preparing to take control of Sterling Holdings completely.””
Daniel looked at his father.
“Why?””
Richard smiled coldly.
“Because I was the only one strong enough to lead.””
“No,” Jonathan said.
“Because you were afraid.””
The words struck harder than shouting.
“You knew Amelia would expose you. You knew Dad would choose her over you.””
Richard’s face changed.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Jonathan looked at me.
“My father loved your mother like a daughter. When he discovered the truth, he changed his will.””
Daniel grabbed the folder from the table.
“The inheritance.””
Jonathan nodded.
“Half the company was supposed to go to Amelia and her child.””
My stomach tightened.
“Me.””
“Yes.””
Richard stepped forward.
“That was never supposed to happen.””
Daniel looked disgusted.
“So you tried to erase them.””
Richard didn’t answer.
Jonathan continued.
“When Amelia found out she was pregnant, Richard panicked. He knew the child would become the legal heir.””
I looked at my mother.
She looked broken.
“What did he do?””
Jonathan’s jaw tightened.
“He threatened her.””
Richard suddenly shouted.
“Enough!””
Everyone froze.
The billionaire who controlled entire industries was finally losing control.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You sacrificed people.””
Richard looked at me.
“I sacrificed myself for this family.””
I laughed quietly.
“Your family.””
The words made him flinch.
Before anyone could respond, a loud noise came from outside.
Security alarms.
Everyone turned.
A guard rushed into the room.
“Mr. Sterling, there’s a problem.””
Daniel frowned.
“What happened?””
The guard looked nervous.
“The company servers were accessed overnight.””
Richard immediately looked at Jonathan.
“You.””
Jonathan shook his head.
“I didn’t do anything.””
The guard handed Daniel a tablet.
“There’s more.””
Daniel read the screen.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“The person who accessed the files…”
A pause.
“It was registered under your name.””
My heart stopped.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel turned the screen toward me.
My name was there.
My information.
My access code.
I looked at Jonathan.
Then my mother.
Then Richard.
May you like
Someone had stolen my identity.
And someone wanted the Sterling family to believe I was the one attacking them.
