Chapter 3: The Secret They Buried

The next morning, the Sterling mansion felt less like a home and more like a crime scene.

Every hallway carried whispers.

Every closed door held another secret.

I sat at the long dining table where I had once shared birthday dinners with Daniel’s family.

Now I sat across from the people who had spent years hiding my identity.

Daniel stayed beside me.

He hadn’t slept.

Neither had I.

The documents from the hidden compartment covered the table.

Ownership records.

Letters.

Old legal agreements.

Proof that my mother, Amelia Rose, had once been part of the Sterling empire.

But none of it explained why she vanished.

Richard Sterling entered the room wearing the same calm expression he wore during business negotiations.

I hated that.

How could someone look so controlled after destroying an entire life?

Daniel stood.

“Tell us the truth.””

Richard poured himself coffee.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

Richard looked at me.

“Your mother was reckless.””

My hands tightened.

“She was my mother.””

“She was my downfall.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Watch what you say.””

Richard ignored him.

“Amelia believed she could expose me. She discovered financial problems within the company.””

“What financial problems?”” Daniel asked.

Richard didn’t answer.

Eleanor walked in.

“Stop lying.””

Everyone turned.

She looked exhausted.

“I should have told the truth years ago.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“Eleanor.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“But I watched you destroy her life. I watched you make everyone believe Amelia abandoned her child.””

My heart raced.

“You told people my mother left me?””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology felt too small.

Too late.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Where is Amelia?””

Silence.

Then Eleanor whispered:

“She isn’t dead.””

The room froze.

I couldn’t move.

“What?””

Eleanor looked at me.

“She was alive when she left.””

My voice barely worked.

“Where is she?””

Richard suddenly stood.

“Enough.””

Daniel turned.

“You knew?””

Richard said nothing.

And that was all I needed.

“You knew my mother was alive.””

Richard’s expression cracked.

Only slightly.

But enough.

A phone rang.

Everyone looked down.

It was the security chief’s phone.

He answered.

“Hello?””

His face changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Mr. Sterling, someone is waiting outside.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

The security chief hesitated.

Then he handed Daniel the phone.

A woman’s voice came through.

A voice I had not heard in twenty-one years.

“Clara?””

My heart stopped.

I gripped the table.

Because even after all this time…

I knew that voice.

“Mom?””

Nobody breathed.

The woman on the phone began crying.

“My little girl…”

I covered my mouth.

Daniel looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“She’s here.””

Richard backed away.

“No.””

For the first time, the powerful billionaire looked afraid.

Daniel noticed.

“Why are you scared?””

Richard didn’t answer.

The front doors opened.

A woman stepped into the mansion.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably familiar.

She looked at me like she had been searching for this moment her entire life.

Then she whispered:

“Clara, I’m sorry it took me this long to come home.””

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

Because the woman standing in front of me was the face from my locket.

My mother.

And behind her, a man walked in holding a folder.

A man Daniel recognized immediately.

His eyes widened.

“Dad…”

Richard turned pale.

May you like

Because the man standing beside my mother was supposed to be dead.

And he was carrying the one document that could destroy the Sterling family forever.
