Chapter 10: The Woman Who Held the Final Secret

The person standing behind Richard made everyone turn.

At first, I thought it was another ghost from the past.

Another secret.

Another person who had watched my life from the shadows.

But then my mother whispered a name.

“Evelyn.””

The elderly woman stepped into the room holding a leather folder against her chest.

She looked fragile.

But her eyes were sharp.

She looked directly at me.

And I knew immediately.

She knew everything.

Richard’s expression changed.

“What are you doing here?””

Evelyn ignored him.

She walked toward me.

“Clara Rose.””

My throat tightened.

“How do you know my name?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was there when your mother gave it to you.””

My mother stood frozen.

“Evelyn…”

The woman looked at her.

“I’m sorry, Amelia.””

The pain in her voice was real.

“I should have come sooner.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I was your grandfather’s private assistant for thirty years.””

She placed the folder on the table.

“And I kept the final piece of evidence.””

Richard’s face turned cold.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

She opened the folder.

Inside was a document protected by a plastic sleeve.

A will.

Not a copy.

The original.

Daniel stared.

“Where did you get that?””

“Your grandfather gave it to me before he died.””

The room became silent.

Richard’s anger disappeared.

Replaced by fear.

“You’re lying.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your father knew you would try to destroy it.””

She turned the document toward us.

“He told me, ‘If Richard ever tries to take what belongs to Amelia’s child, give this to her.’”

My hands shook.

“Why didn’t you?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Because I was afraid.””

Another person.

Another excuse.

But this time, I saw something different.

Regret.

“Richard found out I had it. He threatened my family.””

She looked down.

“I spent twenty-five years running.””

My mother walked closer.

“You knew where I was?””

Evelyn nodded.

“I did.””

My mother’s face fell.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Richard was watching everyone.””

She looked at Jonathan.

“He even made sure your father disappeared.””

Jonathan clenched his fists.

“I spent years hiding under another name.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“You destroyed everyone.””

Richard suddenly laughed.

“You all think I’m the monster.””

Nobody answered.

Because he was.

He looked at me.

“You have no idea what it takes to protect an empire.””

I stared at him.

“An empire built on lies.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“You think you’re different from me?””

The question caught me off guard.

“You have no idea what you’re capable of.””

Daniel stepped between us.

“Don’t.””

Richard ignored him.

“Your grandfather chose you because he thought blood mattered.””

He pointed at the will.

“But blood is exactly what destroys families.””

Evelyn opened the document.

“There is one condition.””

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel frowned.

“What condition?””

She read the page.

“Clara Rose Sterling cannot receive control of the company unless all surviving family members agree that Richard Sterling committed fraud and abuse of power.””

Silence.

Then Richard smiled.

“Impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because nobody will admit it.””

He looked around the room.

“My family will choose the company.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“No.””

Richard turned.

“What did you say?””

Daniel looked at his father.

“I choose the truth.””

For the first time, Richard looked genuinely shocked.

Victoria suddenly appeared at the doorway.

Everyone turned.

She looked exhausted.

But alive.

Daniel rushed toward her.

“Where were you?””

She looked at Richard.

“He knows.””

Nobody moved.

Victoria walked into the room.

“I found the recording. I found the documents. I found everything.””

Her voice trembled.

“And I finally understand what you did.””

Richard stared at his daughter.

“Victoria.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

The word broke something inside him.

“I spent my whole life trying to become someone you would respect.””

She wiped away tears.

“But you never loved us.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what love is.””

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“But Clara does.””

The room went quiet.

Then Victoria handed Daniel a small device.

“What’s this?””

“The final recording.””

Daniel looked confused.

“The one from Grandpa?””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Richard.

“The one Dad made himself.””

Richard’s face changed.

“What?””

Victoria stepped back.

“You recorded yourself.””

Nobody breathed.

She looked at me.

“And you need to hear what he said after Grandpa died.””

She pressed the button.

A voice filled the room.

Richard’s voice.

Younger.

Colder.

“If Amelia’s daughter ever comes back…”

The recording paused.

Then continued.

“Make sure she never discovers who she really is.””

I felt the blood leave my face.

Because the voice wasn’t the worst part.

The worst part was the next sentence.

“I don’t care if she has to hate me.””

A pause.

“As long as she never learns the truth about her mother’s death.””

My mother screamed.

“What did you say?””

Everyone froze.

Because until that moment…

We thought my mother had disappeared.

We thought my father had been forced away.

But nobody had ever mentioned death.

May you like

Richard had.

And now everyone wanted to know why.
