Chapter 9: The Name On The Old Records
The room felt smaller.
Everyone was looking around.
Everyone wondering the same thing.
Who else?
Vanessa looked at my mother.
My mother looked at the floor.
And suddenly, I knew.
There was another secret.
Thomas opened the folder again.
“These records are from before your father died.””
He placed several pages on the table.
“I reviewed them this morning after receiving the fraud alert.””
I picked up the first page.
Company ownership.
Transfer history.
Authorization signatures.
My eyes moved down the document.
Then stopped.
There was a name.
A name I never expected.
Patricia Morgan.
My mother.
I looked at her.
“No.””
She closed her eyes.
“Claire.””
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“You told me you knew nothing.””
She started crying.
“I didn’t want this to happen.””
“But you signed.””
“I was forced.””
Vanessa immediately turned.
“Mom.””
Everyone noticed.
The way Vanessa said it.
Not shocked.
Not confused.
Afraid.
I looked between them.
“You both knew.””
My mother shook her head.
“It wasn’t supposed to hurt you.””
I stared.
“How does stealing from me not hurt me?””
She had no answer.
Thomas looked at Graham.
“Your wife convinced Patricia that the transfer would protect the family.””
Graham looked disgusted.
“So you both planned this?””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“Don’t act innocent.””
Everyone turned.
She looked at Graham.
“You only cared because you found out about the company.””
“That’s not true.””
“Yes, it is.””
Her voice became louder.
“You loved the idea of marrying into wealth.””
Graham stepped back.
“I married you because I loved you.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Then why are you leaving?””
He had no answer.
Not because he agreed.
Because he was hurt.
I watched them.
And for the first time, I realized Vanessa had spent years surrounding herself with people who loved what she provided.
Not who she was.
Thomas pointed at the documents.
“There is one more signature.””
I looked down.
Another name.
Daniel.
My ex-husband.
My chest tightened.
Daniel wasn’t just Vanessa’s affair.
He was part of the plan.
A memory hit me.
The day Daniel left.
He didn’t take much.
He didn’t fight.
He simply said he needed a fresh start.
I thought he abandoned us.
But maybe…
He wasn’t leaving.
He was making room.
“Where is Daniel now?””
Nobody answered.
Vanessa looked away.
That scared me.
Because Vanessa always had an answer.
Always.
I turned to Thomas.
“Find him.””
Thomas nodded.
“I already tried.””
“And?””
“He disappeared this morning.””
My heart sank.
Before anyone could speak, my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
My blood ran cold.
Claire, if you are reading this, Vanessa failed.
I looked at the sender.
Daniel.
Another message appeared.
You need to know the truth about why your father died.
The room disappeared.
My father.
Everyone knew how he died.
An accident.
That was what my mother told me.
That was what Vanessa told me.
But now Daniel was saying something else.
A third message arrived.
I have proof.
Then:
Meet me alone if you want to know who really betrayed your father.
I stared at the screen.
Thomas noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I locked my phone.
“Nothing.””
But it wasn’t nothing.
Because suddenly, the wedding scandal wasn’t the biggest secret anymore.
The affair.
The stolen company.
The fake signature.
All of it was only the beginning.
And somewhere out there, Daniel had the answer to the question I had never dared to ask.

Who killed my father’s trust in the people he loved?
And why had my own family spent six years making sure I never found out?
