Chapter 6: The Letter My Father Hid

The entire ballroom watched as I held the envelope.

My father’s handwriting stared back at me.

FOR CLAIRE ONLY.

Six years after his death, his words had somehow found their way back into my hands.

And Vanessa was terrified.

I looked at her.

“Why don’t you want me to read this?””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I held the envelope tighter.

“I understand more than I ever have.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Claire, please listen to me.””

I looked at her.

“Did Dad know?””

Her face changed.

That was all I needed.

“You knew.””

Patricia covered her mouth.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

I stared at her.

“Everyone always says that after they hurt someone.””

The room became silent.

Graham looked between us.

“Someone needs to explain what’s happening.””

Nobody answered.

So I opened the envelope.

Inside was one page.

Only one.

My father’s handwriting filled the paper.

My hands trembled as I read.

Claire,

If you are reading this, it means someone tried to take what belongs to you.

I stopped.

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

She looked sick.

I continued.

Your sister will tell you she deserves it because she stayed close to the family business.

Your mother will tell you she was protecting everyone.

Neither is true.

The words blurred.

I swallowed.

My father knew.

He knew what they were capable of.

I kept reading.

The greatest mistake I made was believing people become honest when they are given everything.

Some people only become better at hiding when they have more to lose.

I looked up.

Vanessa looked away.

The next sentence made my heart stop.

The trust was never just money.

It was created because I discovered someone inside my family was attempting to transfer company ownership without my permission.

My breath caught.

Someone inside my family.

Graham whispered,

“Vanessa?””

She looked at him.

“No.””

But nobody believed her.

I read the final lines.

Claire,

If anything happens to me, do not trust anyone who says they were protecting you.

The person who betrays you will always call it love.

The letter ended with my father’s signature.

I lowered the paper.

The room was completely silent.

Then Vanessa laughed.

A small, broken laugh.

“You think that proves anything?””

I looked at her.

“It proves Dad knew.””

She shook her head.

“Dad was paranoid.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“He was careful.””

Her expression changed.

For years, Vanessa had controlled every room she entered.

But not this one.

Not anymore.

Graham looked at her.

“Were you trying to steal from her?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I was trying to fix things.””

“By lying?””

“I was protecting this family.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

Even now.

Even caught.

She still believed she was the victim.

My mother walked toward me.

“Claire, you don’t understand what your father left behind.””

I turned.

“Then explain.””

She hesitated.

And that hesitation told me there was another secret.

“What else?””

Patricia looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“There was a condition in the trust.””

My stomach tightened.

“What condition?””

She whispered:

“You only receive full control when you prove you have someone who will protect the company with you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Before my mother could answer, the ballroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A man in a dark suit entered carrying a folder.

He looked around the room.

Then his eyes landed on me.

“Claire Morgan?””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

He walked closer.

“I’m Thomas Reed. Your father’s attorney.””

My heart raced.

“Why are you here?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at my mother.

“I came because the trust detected an attempted transfer.””

The room went silent.

Thomas handed me another document.

“And because your father left one final instruction.””

I looked at the paper.

“What instruction?””

Thomas glanced at Lily.

Then back at me.

“Your father knew someone would try to take everything from you.””

He paused.

“So he created a protection clause.””

I unfolded the document.

The final line was written in bold.

And when I read it, I realized my father’s last move had changed everything.

May you like

Because the person who could protect my inheritance…

Was someone Vanessa never expected.
