Chapter 7: The Person My Father Chose
The words on the document made my hands go cold.
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
Because my mind refused to accept it.
The protection clause wasn’t naming a lawyer.
It wasn’t naming a business partner.
It wasn’t naming someone powerful or wealthy.
It named Lily.
My eight-year-old daughter.
I looked at Thomas.
“That’s impossible.””
He shook his head.
“No, Claire. It was your father’s decision.””
The ballroom erupted with whispers.
A child.
Everyone was thinking the same thing.
How could an eight-year-old protect a company?
Vanessa laughed.
A sharp, nervous laugh.
“Your father named a child?””
She looked around.
“Do you all hear how ridiculous this is?””
Thomas remained calm.
“Your father wasn’t asking Lily to run a company.””
“Then what is this?””
“He created a guardian clause.””
I stared at the paper.
“What kind of guardian?””
Thomas opened the folder.
“Someone who would hold temporary authority over the trust until Claire’s chosen successor reached adulthood.””
My eyes widened.
“My chosen successor?””
Thomas nodded.
“Your father believed ownership should stay with someone who valued family over power.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“And he chose Claire?””
Thomas looked at her.
“He chose Claire because she was the only person he trusted not to use the company as a weapon.””
That sentence hit harder than anything else.
Because all my life, Vanessa had made me feel like being kind meant being weak.
But my father saw something different.
He saw restraint.
He saw loyalty.
He saw me.
Graham looked at Vanessa.
“So Claire owns the company?””
Thomas nodded.
“Controlling ownership.””
The ballroom went silent.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Thomas handed me another document.
“This is the original trust agreement.””
I opened it.
There it was.
My name.
My father’s signature.
The company shares.
The ownership transfer.
Everything Vanessa had spent years hiding.
My mother suddenly stepped forward.
“Claire, your father didn’t understand what he was doing.””
I looked at her.
“You knew.””
She looked away.
“You don’t know the whole story.””
“Then tell me.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because there was no explanation that could fix what she had done.
Graham removed his wedding ring completely.
Vanessa stared at him.
“Graham.””
He didn’t look at her.
“I need to leave.””
Her face collapsed.
“After everything?””
He looked at her.
“After everything you hid.””
The guests watched as he walked away.
The wedding that was supposed to make Vanessa untouchable was falling apart around her.
But I still had questions.
I turned to Thomas.
“Why did my father hide this from me?””
Thomas sighed.
“Because he believed someone close to you was manipulating you.””
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“Who?””
Thomas hesitated.
Then he looked at my mother.
Everyone noticed.
My mother took a step back.
“Don’t.””
Thomas opened another file.
“Patricia Morgan signed multiple documents attempting to transfer company assets before your father passed away.””
The air disappeared from my lungs.
My mother.
Not just Vanessa.
My mother.
“You tried to steal from me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to save the family.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You were trying to save yourself.””
Lily stepped closer.
She held my hand.
Thomas looked at her.
“Your grandfather loved you very much.””
Lily looked confused.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
He smiled sadly.
“He left something else for you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Thomas reached into the folder.
He pulled out a small wooden box.
My father’s initials were carved into the top.
I recognized it immediately.
It was the box he used to keep old photographs.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Not for me.
For Lily.
I looked at Thomas.
“When did he write this?””
“Two months before he died.””
I opened the letter.
The first line broke my heart.
My sweet Lily,
If you are reading this, you are probably old enough to understand why your mother had to be strong.
My eyes filled with tears.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And my entire body froze.
Because my father had written one warning.
A warning about Vanessa.
May you like
A warning he never told anyone.
And it explained exactly why Vanessa was desperate to stop Lily from playing that video.
