Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
Nobody moved.
The screen remained frozen on my signature.
My signature.
On a document I had never seen.
The ballroom that had been filled with laughter minutes earlier now felt like a courtroom.
Everyone was looking at me.
But I was looking at my mother.
Patricia wiped her tears quickly.
That made my stomach turn.
Because my mother had never cried when I lost my marriage.
She never cried when Daniel left.
She never cried when I worked two jobs to pay rent.
But now she was crying.
Because she had been caught.
“Mom,” I whispered.
She looked away.
That was the answer.
Graham turned toward Vanessa.
“What is that document?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“It’s nothing.””
Nobody believed her.
Graham laughed once.
A cold, painful sound.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Graham, this is being misunderstood.””
He pointed at the screen.
“My wife is in another man’s apartment.””
The room stayed silent.
“And now there’s a document with Claire’s signature?””
Vanessa looked around desperately.
“Everyone needs to calm down.””
I almost laughed.
Calm down.
That was always what Vanessa said when she was losing control.
I stepped closer to the screen.
“Play it again.””
The DJ looked at Graham.
Graham nodded.
“Play it.””
The video continued.
Daniel opened the folder.
His voice came through the speakers.
“She won’t remember signing it.””
My entire body went cold.
The crowd reacted instantly.
I felt Lily grab my hand.
I looked down at her.
She was scared now.
The confidence she had shown moments ago disappeared.
I knelt beside her.
“Lily, why did you keep this?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I heard them talking.””
“When?””
“At our apartment.””
I touched her cheek.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked down.
“Because Aunt Vanessa told Uncle Daniel not to worry because nobody would believe me.””
My heart broke.
An eight-year-old child had been protecting me.
A child.
While the adults around her were destroying my life.
Graham looked at me.
“Claire, what document is that?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“You’re acting like she’s innocent.””
Everyone turned.
I stared at my sister.
“What?””
She pointed at me.
“She’s always been jealous.””
A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.
My mother immediately added, “Claire has always struggled with accepting that Vanessa built a better life.””
I felt something inside me break.
Not because they insulted me.
I had survived worse.
But because they were doing it in front of Lily.
Again.
I stood straight.
“For years, I stayed quiet because I thought you were my family.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Don’t make this dramatic.””
I looked at her.
“You brought my ex-husband into my home.””
Her face changed.
“And you expect me to be quiet?””
The screen suddenly changed.
The video showed Daniel placing the document on the table.
Then he said something that made every person in the ballroom freeze.
“The transfer is already prepared.””
Graham looked confused.
“Transfer?””
Vanessa turned toward the DJ.
“Turn it off!””
But it was too late.
Daniel’s voice echoed through the speakers.
“Once Claire loses control of the account, everything goes to—”
The video cut.
The screen went black.
The room erupted.
“What account?””
“What is happening?””
“Claire, what did they do?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I suddenly remembered something.
Three months earlier.
The day I signed papers after my divorce.
My mother had offered to help me organize my finances.
Vanessa had hugged me and told me I was lucky to have family.
I trusted them.
I had trusted them both.
Graham walked toward Vanessa.
“Tell me the truth.””
She looked at him.
“I love you.””
He shook his head.
“That wasn’t my question.””
For once, Vanessa had nothing to say.
Then Lily tugged my sleeve.
“Mommy.””
I looked down.
She was holding something else from her purse.
Not the flash drive.
A small folded piece of paper.
My face went numb.
“Where did you get that?””
Lily looked toward my mother.
“She dropped it at our house.””
Patricia’s expression changed instantly.
I opened the paper.
There was a bank account number.
A transfer amount.
And at the bottom, a name.
A name I never expected to see.
Mine.
But the signature beside it wasn’t mine.
I looked at Vanessa.
Then my mother.
And I realized the secret they were hiding was not just about my ex-husband.
May you like
They had been planning to take something from me long before this wedding day.
And now, in front of three hundred witnesses, I was finally going to find out what they stole.
