Chapter 14: The Last Secret My Father Left Me

I couldn’t move.

The phone pressed against my ear.

My mother’s breathing was the only sound.

“What happened that night?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

“Mom.””

“I was there.””

My chest tightened.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

I sat down slowly.

My whole life, I thought my mother had been at home.

I thought my father drove alone.

I thought there was nothing more to know.

But she was there.

“What happened?””

Her voice shook.

“Your father discovered everything.””

“Everything?””

“The company transfers. The fake documents. Vanessa and Daniel.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

My father had known.

“He confronted me.””

The pain in her voice sounded real.

But it didn’t erase anything.

“What did you do?””

Silence.

Then:

“I made a mistake.””

My hands tightened.

“What mistake?””

“I told him I would fix it.””

“And?””

“I thought I could control Vanessa.””

A bitter laugh escaped her.

“I was wrong.””

The pieces came together.

My mother wasn’t just protecting Vanessa.

She was trying to clean up a disaster she helped create.

“What happened to Dad’s car?””

She started crying.

“I don’t know.””

I froze.

“You don’t know?””

“I swear.””

Her voice became desperate.

“I never wanted him hurt.””

“Then why did you hide the truth?””

“Because I knew who did it.””

The room went silent.

I whispered:

“Who?””

My mother took a shaky breath.

“I can’t say.””

“Why?””

“Because they know where I am.””

I stood.

“Mom, where are you?””

No answer.

“Mom?””

Then she whispered:

“Claire, listen to me.””

The fear in her voice was real.

“Trust nobody.””

The call ended.

I immediately called back.

Nothing.

Thomas arrived thirty minutes later.

I told him everything.

His expression changed.

“Your mother may be in danger.””

“From Vanessa?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

That scared me.

Because for the first time, Vanessa didn’t seem like the biggest threat.

The next morning, police found my mother.

Alive.

But shaken.

She had been hiding in an old hotel outside the city.

When I saw her, I didn’t know what I felt.

Anger.

Pain.

Love.

All mixed together.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

“Claire.””

I stood there.

For years, I had wanted an apology.

Now that she was finally there, I didn’t know if it was enough.

“Tell me the truth.””

She nodded.

“I will.””

She handed Thomas a small envelope.

“I kept this hidden.””

Inside was a photograph.

My father.

Standing beside another man.

Thomas looked at it.

His face changed.

“Who is that?””

My mother whispered:

“Your father’s business partner.””

I frowned.

“Why does that matter?””

She looked at me.

“Because he was the last person who saw your father alive.””

Thomas turned the photo over.

There was a date.

The night of the accident.

My heart raced.

“Why didn’t anyone investigate?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Because the man had influence.””

“Who was he?””

She looked terrified.

Then said:

“Graham’s father.””

I froze.

Graham.

Vanessa’s fiancé.

His father.

The same family Vanessa was trying to marry into.

Thomas immediately stood.

“We need to find him.””

But before we could move, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“You’re looking in the wrong direction, Claire.””

I recognized it.

Daniel.

“Where are you?””

“Close.””

“Why did you disappear?””

“Because I found the final piece.””

“What piece?””

Silence.

Then:

“The person who ordered your father’s death.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Daniel whispered:

“It wasn’t your mother.””

A pause.

“It was someone who has been standing beside your family for years.””

May you like

The line went dead.

And I realized the truth was still one step ahead of me.
