Chapter 10: The Meeting My Family Never Wanted

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

I have proof.

Three simple words.

But they carried the weight of six years of unanswered questions.

Six years of believing my father died because life was unfair.

Six years of accepting the explanation everyone gave me.

An accident.

That was all I ever heard.

My mother cried when she told me.

Vanessa held my hand.

Daniel sat silently beside me.

They all looked devastated.

I never questioned them.

Because they were my family.

Now I wondered if they were actors.

“Claire?””

Thomas’s voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

“What happened?””

I locked my phone.

“Daniel contacted me.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“What did he say?””

The urgency in her voice exposed her.

I looked at her.

“You already know?””

She froze.

“No.””

But she answered too quickly.

Thomas noticed.

“Claire, what did the message say?””

I looked around the ballroom.

At the broken decorations.

The abandoned wedding cake.

The flowers that were supposed to celebrate Vanessa’s perfect future.

Then I looked at Lily.

She was exhausted.

She had spent the entire night watching adults betray each other.

I made a decision.

“Not here.””

Thomas nodded.

“We need to leave.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You can’t just walk away.””

I turned.

“Why?””

Her face tightened.

“Because this involves all of us.””

I stared at her.

“That’s exactly why I’m leaving.””

For the first time, Vanessa had no response.

Outside Rosewood Estate, the night air felt colder than it should have.

The wedding guests slowly left behind us.

The entire event had become a disaster nobody would forget.

But I couldn’t think about Vanessa anymore.

Not yet.

Because Daniel’s message changed everything.

On the drive home, Lily sat quietly in the back seat.

Usually she would ask a hundred questions.

Tonight, she asked only one.

“Mommy?””

I looked in the mirror.

“Yes?””

“Are we safe now?””

The question broke something inside me.

I pulled over.

I turned around.

“Lily.””

She looked at me.

“You were never supposed to protect me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I just wanted them to stop hurting you.””

I reached back and held her hand.

“You did something very brave.””

She nodded.

Then whispered:

“I heard Aunt Vanessa talking before.””

My heart tightened.

“When?””

“Before the wedding.””

I turned around fully.

“What did she say?””

Lily looked nervous.

“She said after tonight, you would have nothing.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What else?””

“She said Grandpa’s mistake was loving you more.””

I closed my eyes.

My father.

Even after death, he was still protecting me.

When we arrived home, Thomas was waiting.

He had already sent someone to secure my documents.

“There’s something you need to see.””

He handed me a folder.

Inside were old records.

Bank statements.

Company files.

And one photograph.

My father.

My mother.

Vanessa.

Daniel.

Together.

Years ago.

I looked at Thomas.

“Why is Daniel in this picture?””

Thomas sighed.

“Because your father knew him.””

“What?””

“Daniel worked with the company before your divorce.””

I felt sick.

“He was never just my husband.””

“No.””

Thomas looked serious.

“He was connected to your father’s business.””

I sat down.

All those years.

My marriage.

My family.

Everything was connected.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone went quiet.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Daniel’s voice came through.

“Claire.””

My hands tightened.

“Where are you?””

“I don’t have much time.””

“You need to explain everything.””

A pause.

Then he said:

“I know.””

His voice sounded different.

Not confident.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

“Claire, I need you to listen carefully.””

“Why should I trust you?””

“Because your father was right.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Another pause.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Vanessa wasn’t the person who started this.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who was?””

May you like

Daniel answered:

“The person who told me to marry you.””
