Chapter 12: The Truth Beneath The Rose
The white rose sat on the floor like a message.
Not an accident.
Not a mistake.
A warning.
I stared at it.
My hands became cold.
Vanessa.
It had to be Vanessa.
But Thomas shook his head.
“Don’t assume.””
I looked at him.
“Who else would leave that?””
He picked up the rose carefully.
“Someone who wants you to think it’s her.””
That scared me more.
Because he was right.
Vanessa was reckless.
Emotional.
But whoever broke into my home knew exactly what they were doing.
They didn’t destroy anything.
They didn’t steal random valuables.
They took only documents.
Only evidence.
Only things connected to my father.
Thomas checked the office again.
“Your desk was searched.””
I walked in.
The room looked almost normal.
Almost.
Then I noticed something.
The picture frame.
A photo of my father and me.
It was turned face down.
I picked it up.
Behind it was a small scratch on the wood.
A memory returned.
My father tapping the frame when I was younger.
“Claire, remember this.””
I froze.
He had hidden something.
Not in the frame.
Behind it.
I removed the back panel.
A small compartment opened.
Inside was a tiny key.
And a note.
My heart raced.
The note was from my father.
Claire,
If they find the papers, they will look for the obvious places.
Do not trust what is easy to find.
The truth was never hidden where people searched.
It was hidden where people forgot.
I looked at Thomas.
“What does that mean?””
He stared at the key.
“Your father was preparing for this.””
I held it.
“Preparing for what?””
Before he answered, my phone buzzed.
Another message.
From Daniel.
I opened it.
The meeting place.
The old house.
The place where my father kept his personal files.
Thomas read it.
“You cannot go alone.””
“I know.””
“You’re still considering it.””
I looked at him.
“Because Daniel knows something.””
Thomas sighed.
“Daniel also helped betray you.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
I looked toward the stairs.
Where Lily was sleeping.
“Because if someone destroyed my family once, I need to know why.””
The next morning, Thomas drove me.
The old Morgan family house had been empty for years.
Dust covered the windows.
The garden was overgrown.
But the oak tree behind the house was still there.
The same tree from my childhood.
I walked toward it.
And I saw something carved into the bark.
A small mark.
My father’s symbol.
I dug beneath the roots.
My fingers touched metal.
A box.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
And a recording device.
Thomas looked shocked.
“Your father planned everything.””
I pressed play.
My father’s voice filled the quiet yard.
“If you are hearing this, then I failed to stop them.””
My breath caught.
He sounded older.
Tired.
But calm.
“I need you to understand something, Claire.””
The recording continued.
“The person who betrayed me is not the person you think.””
I looked at Thomas.
The same sentence again.
Not the person you think.
My father continued.
“Vanessa wanted control.””
A pause.
“But she was not the one who had the power.””
My heart raced.
“Patricia was afraid.””
The recording became quieter.
“She made a choice.””
I closed my eyes.
My mother.
Again.
Then my father said the words that changed everything.
“The person who caused my death was someone who knew I would never suspect them.””
The recording stopped.
Thomas looked at me.
“That’s all?””
I turned the device over.
There was another file.
I pressed play.
A woman’s voice appeared.
My blood froze.
Because I recognized it instantly.
My mother.
But she wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t apologizing.
She was giving instructions.
“Once Claire signs the transfer, everything belongs to Vanessa.””
I stopped breathing.
Then another voice answered.
A man’s voice.
Daniel.
My father’s last recording had captured the moment they planned everything.
But then my mother said something I never expected.
Something that made me realize Vanessa wasn’t the only person I had underestimated.
“She still thinks I’m her mother.””
The recording continued.
“And that is why she will never see the betrayal coming.””
I looked at Thomas.
Tears filled my eyes.
Not because I was surprised anymore.
Because finally…
I knew the truth.
My family didn’t break apart at Vanessa’s wedding.
May you like
It had broken apart years earlier.
The day my mother decided I was easier to deceive than to love.
