Chapter 8: The Evidence Hidden In My Father’s Box

I couldn’t move.

The letter shook in my hands.

Lily stood beside me, waiting.

She didn’t understand why every adult in the room suddenly looked afraid.

She only knew she had helped me.

She had protected me.

And somehow, that hurt even more.

Because she should have been worrying about cartoons and school projects.

Not family secrets.

I read the letter silently.

My precious Lily,

Your grandfather knows you are young, but one day you will understand something important.

A person’s true character is not shown when they have nothing.

It is shown when they believe nobody can stop them.

I looked up.

Vanessa was staring at the letter.

Not at me.

At the words.

Like she already knew what came next.

I continued.

Your aunt Vanessa has always wanted what others have.

When we were younger, I thought ambition was a good thing.

I was wrong when ambition became more important than love.

My breathing changed.

My father knew.

He had seen it.

Thomas stepped closer.

“There is more.””

I turned the page.

The next paragraph was shorter.

I discovered Vanessa attempted to access company records without permission.

I confronted her.

She denied everything.

But I found evidence.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

Evidence.

Vanessa suddenly moved forward.

“Give me that.””

Security immediately stepped in.

She stopped.

Thomas looked at her.

“You should not have tried to take the letter.””

Her face turned red.

“You’re making me look like a criminal.””

Thomas didn’t respond.

Because he didn’t need to.

The evidence was already speaking.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why?””

She stared at me.

“What?””

“Why did you hate me so much?””

For a moment, she looked hurt.

Then angry.

“I never hated you.””

I laughed quietly.

“You ruined my marriage.””

“That was Daniel.””

“You stole from me.””

“I was fixing Dad’s mistake.””

“You humiliated my daughter.””

Her expression changed.

A tiny pause.

A tiny crack.

“I didn’t mean—”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You meant every word.””

The room was silent.

Because everyone had seen it.

The meal.

The comments.

The way she looked at Lily.

The way she enjoyed making us feel small.

Graham returned.

I hadn’t noticed him leave.

He was holding something.

A phone.

He looked at Vanessa.

“I found another file.””

Her face went pale.

“What?””

Graham looked at me.

“Daniel sent this to Vanessa.””

He unlocked the phone.

Thomas took it.

A few seconds later, he looked serious.

“What is it?””

Graham swallowed.

“A message conversation.””

Thomas read silently.

Then his expression hardened.

He handed me the phone.

I looked.

The messages were between Vanessa and Daniel.

Vanessa:

After the wedding, Claire loses control.

Daniel:

And the company?

Vanessa:

The company becomes ours.

My hands shook.

There it was.

Not a misunderstanding.

Not an accident.

A plan.

A real plan.

I showed the phone to Thomas.

He nodded.

“This is enough to begin legal action.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You’re going to destroy your own sister?””

I stared at her.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“You destroyed yourself.””

My mother suddenly spoke.

“Claire, please.””

I looked at her.

She was crying again.

“I know I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

She lowered her head.

“I was scared.””

I shook my head.

“You weren’t scared.””

I pointed at Vanessa.

“You were afraid she wouldn’t win.””

That was the truth.

My mother had chosen a side.

And it was never mine.

Thomas collected the documents.

“There’s one more thing you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He glanced at the letter.

“Your father included a final instruction.””

My stomach tightened.

“What instruction?””

Thomas looked toward Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Before you take control of the company, you must review the original shareholder records.””

“Why?””

His expression became serious.

“Because there may have been another person involved.””

The ballroom went quiet.

“Another person?””

Thomas nodded.

“And if the records are correct…”

May you like

He paused.

“Someone else in this room has been helping Vanessa from the beginning.””
