Chapter 13: The Mother Who Chose The Lie

I listened to the recording three times.

Three times, hoping I had misunderstood.

Hoping my mother’s voice belonged to someone else.

Hoping there was another explanation.

There wasn’t.

“She still thinks I’m her mother.””

Those words stayed in my head.

Not because they were cruel.

Because they were true.

My entire life, I had believed my mother was the one person who would never betray me.

Even when Vanessa mocked me.

Even when Daniel abandoned me.

Even when the world made me feel small.

I always thought:

At least Mom loves me.

But now I knew.

She loved the version of me that was easy to control.

Thomas carefully took the recorder from my hand.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“You need to understand what this evidence means.””

I laughed quietly.

“I already understand.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“This changes everything legally.””

I looked back at the old house.

The place where my father had hidden the truth.

“My whole family knew.””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Because he knew there was nothing he could say.

When we returned home, Vanessa was waiting.

She stood in the driveway.

Alone.

No designer dress.

No perfect makeup.

No audience.

Just Vanessa.

For the first time, she looked human.

“You went to Dad’s house.””

I stopped walking.

“How do you know?””

She looked away.

“That doesn’t matter.””

“It matters.””

She swallowed.

“Claire, listen to me.””

I almost walked past her.

But something made me stop.

Maybe because despite everything…

She was still my sister.

“What?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Mom went too far.””

I stared.

“You’re blaming Mom now?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I’m telling you the truth.””

I crossed my arms.

“Why should I believe you?””

“Because I was scared of her too.””

That surprised me.

Vanessa noticed.

“She always made me feel like I had to win.””

I stayed silent.

She continued.

“Every birthday. Every achievement. Every relationship.””

She laughed bitterly.

“She never said I was enough.””

I looked at her.

“So you destroyed my life because Mom wanted you to?””

Her face fell.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“No, Claire.””

She wiped her tears.

“I made choices.””

For the first time, Vanessa admitted it.

Not excuses.

Not blame.

Choices.

“I wanted Dad’s company.””

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because I thought if I had everything, I would finally matter.””

The honesty almost hurt more.

Because I understood something.

Vanessa wasn’t born cruel.

She became someone who believed love had to be earned.

But that didn’t erase what she did.

“You still hurt Lily.””

Her face changed.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You don’t know.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t know what it felt like watching my daughter think she wasn’t worth a meal.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

It was the first real apology I had ever heard from her.

But apologies don’t undo damage.

They only prove someone finally understands it.

I walked inside.

Lily ran toward me.

“Mommy!””

I hugged her tightly.

And in that moment, I knew exactly what I had to do.

Protect her.

Not with anger.

Not with revenge.

With the truth.

That evening, Thomas contacted the authorities.

The evidence was enough to begin an investigation.

The fake documents.

The attempted transfers.

The recordings.

Everything.

But there was still one person missing.

My mother.

She disappeared before anyone could reach her.

Then, two days later, she called.

I answered.

“Claire.””

Her voice sounded tired.

Older.

“What do you want?””

A long pause.

“I want to explain.””

I looked at Lily drawing at the kitchen table.

“Explain what?””

“That I never wanted to hurt you.””

I closed my eyes.

“Mom.””

“Yes?””

“You spent six years lying to me.””

Silence.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Another pause.

Then she whispered:

“Of your father’s last secret.””

My heart stopped.

“What secret?””

Her voice became lower.

“The reason he left everything to you.””

I gripped the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

My mother answered:

“Your father didn’t choose you because you were his daughter.””

A chill moved through me.

“He chose you because you were the only one who knew the truth.””

I stood still.

“What truth?””

She started crying.

May you like

Then she said:

“The truth about what happened the night he died.””
