Chapter 6: The Letter That Accused Him

Ethan couldn’t move.

The letter shook in his hands.

His mother’s handwriting.

Her words.

A voice from the past that he thought he would never hear again.

Richard stepped forward.

“Ethan, please.””

But Ethan pulled the letter closer.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“Let me read it.””

Nobody argued.

The entire room waited.

Ethan looked down.

The paper was old, but the ink remained clear.

*Richard,*

*If you found this, something went wrong. I don’t know who I can trust anymore.*

Ethan’s breathing slowed.

*I discovered where the missing money went. It wasn’t a mistake. It wasn’t an accounting problem. Someone deliberately moved it.*

His eyes moved across the page.

*I confronted the person responsible. They told me I would regret looking deeper.*

Ethan looked up.

“Who did she confront?””

Daniel answered.

“She never told me.””

Richard looked away.

Ethan continued reading.

**Richard, I need you to understand something. I’m scared. Not for myself.

For Ethan. If anything happens to me, don’t let him believe I left him.**

Ethan stopped.

The sentence broke something inside him.

All these years.

All the anger he carried toward his mother.

All the nights wondering why she chose to leave.

She hadn’t.

She had been afraid.

“She wanted me to know,” Ethan whispered.

Richard nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Then why didn’t you show me?””

Richard’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because the next line changed everything.””

Ethan looked down.

The final paragraph was darker.

*Richard, I know you think you are protecting me, but you are making the same mistake again. You trust the wrong people.*

Ethan froze.

The words felt like a warning.

Not an accusation.

But someone wanted him to believe otherwise.

Sophia stepped closer.

Ethan looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because you deserve the truth.””

Richard suddenly shouted.

“Enough!””

Everyone turned.

The sound shocked them.

Richard almost never raised his voice.

Daniel stared at him.

“Why are you afraid of the letter?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“Because it’s incomplete.””

Ethan frowned.

“What?””

Richard walked toward the table.

“The second page is missing.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?””

Richard nodded.

“There were two pages.””

Ethan looked between them.

“Where is the second page?””

Nobody answered.

Then Sophia quietly said:

“I have it.””

The room went silent.

Ethan stared at his wife.

“You?””

Sophia reached into her purse.

“I found it months ago.””

Richard looked furious.

“You stole it.””

“I saved it.””

“No,” Richard said.

“You used it.””

Sophia placed the folded paper on the table.

Ethan reached for it.

But before he opened it, Sophia stopped him.

“Before you read this, you should know something.””

Ethan looked at her.

“What?””

Her eyes became cold.

“The second page proves your father lied.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Ethan unfolded the paper.

The handwriting continued.

*Richard, if you are reading this, please understand why I hid the truth from you. The person responsible for the missing money is someone you love. Someone you would never suspect.*

Ethan’s heart raced.

The next line was underlined.

*And the person helping them is closer to you than you realize.*

Ethan slowly looked up.

Everyone was silent.

Everyone except Sophia.

Because she looked like she already knew what came next.

Ethan lowered his eyes back to the page.

And read the final sentence.

*Richard, the person who betrayed me is not your enemy. They are someone standing beside you.*

The room went cold.

Because suddenly Ethan realized something.

The letter didn’t accuse his father.

It warned him.

And whoever had spent thirty years hiding the truth…

was still inside the family.
