Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The phone continued ringing.

Nobody moved.

Nobody even seemed willing to breathe.

Richard Whitmore stared at the name glowing on the screen as if he were looking at a ghost.

Daniel Hayes.

A man who had supposedly disappeared thirty years ago.

A man Ethan had never heard his father mention once.

A man who was connected to the secret that had been buried beneath his entire childhood.

“Dad,” Ethan said slowly.

“Answer it.””

Richard looked at him.

For a moment, Ethan saw something he had never seen before.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Fear.

“Richard,” Sophia said quietly, “you can’t hide forever.””

Richard’s eyes moved toward her.

“You knew he was alive.””

Sophia didn’t deny it.

“I knew someone had been contacting you.””

Ethan looked between them.

“You both knew about this?””

Richard finally answered the call.

Nobody spoke as he lifted the phone to his ear.

“Hello?””

Static filled the room.

Then a man’s voice came through.

Older.

Rough.

But calm.

“Richard.””

Ethan felt a strange chill.

The voice sounded like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.

Richard gripped the phone tighter.

“Daniel.””

Sophia stepped closer.

Ethan noticed her reaction.

She wasn’t surprised.

She was prepared.

“How are you alive?”” Richard asked.

A quiet laugh came through the speaker.

“That’s the first question you ask after thirty years?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“You shouldn’t have called.””

“No,” Daniel replied.

“You should have told your son the truth before someone else did.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Who is this?””

The line went silent.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“Ethan?””

Hearing his own name from a stranger made Ethan’s stomach tighten.

“Yes.””

A long pause followed.

“I’m your uncle.””

The words landed harder than Ethan expected.

His eyes moved toward Richard.

His father looked away.

“Dad?””

Richard didn’t respond.

Daniel continued.

“Your father spent thirty years making sure you never knew I existed.””

Ethan’s anger returned.

“Why?””

Richard finally spoke.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

Ethan turned.

“You keep saying that.””

His voice cracked.

“But every secret you kept destroyed me anyway.””

Richard looked wounded.

But he didn’t argue.

Because he knew Ethan was right.

Daniel spoke again.

“Your mother didn’t abandon you, Ethan.””

The room became silent.

Ethan froze.

He had spent decades believing that sentence.

Believing his mother chose to leave.

Believing his father was the one who stayed.

“She was trying to expose something,” Daniel continued.

“What?”” Ethan asked.

Richard immediately interrupted.

“Daniel, stop.””

But Daniel ignored him.

“Your mother discovered that someone inside your father’s company was stealing money.””

Ethan looked confused.

“My father’s company?””

Richard lowered his head.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

Ethan stepped back.

“No more half-truths.””

He pointed toward the phone.

“Let him talk.””

Richard looked at his son.

Then slowly nodded.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother found financial records that proved millions had been taken from the company.””

Sophia’s eyes shifted.

Ethan noticed.

“You know about this.””

Sophia looked at him.

“I know more than you think.””

Richard immediately turned toward her.

“Where did you get that information?””

Sophia smiled faintly.

“From someone who wanted the truth exposed.””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“She’s working with me.””

Ethan looked at Sophia.

The woman he had defended minutes earlier.

The woman he had believed without question.

“You knew him?””

Sophia didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“You used me,” Ethan whispered.

Her expression softened.

“No, Ethan. I needed you to finally see what your father did.””

Richard stood.

“I did not kill your mother.””

Nobody said anything.

The accusation hung in the air.

Ethan looked at him.

“Who said anything about killing?””

Richard’s face changed.

A second too late.

And Ethan noticed.

“You thought that’s what this was about.””

Richard remained silent.

Daniel’s voice came through the phone.

“Your father knows exactly what happened the night your mother disappeared.””

Ethan looked at Richard.

“Tell me.””

Richard’s hands trembled.

“I can’t.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You can’t?””

The disappointment in his voice hurt more than anger.

“I watched you get slapped tonight because I believed the worst about you. I thought you were a monster.””

Richard looked down.

“And now you’re asking me to trust you?””

The words destroyed him.

Because they were true.

Richard slowly sat back down.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Everyone saw the screen.

It was from Daniel.

One sentence.

*Ask Richard where he was the night your mother died.*

Ethan stared at his father.

Richard’s face went pale.

May you like

And for the first time in thirty years…

the truth was no longer buried.
