Chapter 11: The Evidence Hidden for Thirty Years

Ethan stared at the envelope.

It felt heavier than paper should feel.

Thirty years of secrets.

Thirty years of pain.

And maybe one answer.

He looked at his father.

Richard didn’t stop him this time.

He simply looked defeated.

“Open it,” Richard whispered.

The room went quiet.

Ethan opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Old.

Faded.

A picture of his mother standing outside a building.

Beside her was a man.

Ethan leaned closer.

He didn’t recognize the man.

But Richard did.

His face changed immediately.

“Who is that?””

Ethan looked at him.

Richard didn’t answer.

Michael smiled.

“You know.””

Richard’s voice became barely audible.

“That’s Victor.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“Victor Hale?””

Ethan frowned.

“Who?””

Michael answered.

“The man who owned the company before your father.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“He was my business partner.””

“And your enemy,” Michael said.

Ethan looked at the photograph again.

His mother looked serious.

Like she was arguing with the man.

“What does this prove?””

Michael placed another document on the table.

“A payment record.””

Ethan looked.

The date was the week before his mother disappeared.

The amount was enormous.

The sender?

Victor Hale.

The recipient?

Richard Whitmore.

Ethan looked up.

“You received money from him.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer shocked everyone.

“Why?””

Richard sat down.

“Because I sold my share of the company.””

Ethan stared.

“And you never told me?””

“I didn’t think it mattered.””

Michael laughed.

“It mattered.””

Richard looked at him.

“You’re twisting this.””

“Am I?””

Michael pointed at the document.

“The payment happened three days before she disappeared.””

Ethan’s heart sank.

“Dad.””

Richard looked at him.

“I swear to you, Ethan. That money had nothing to do with your mother.””

“But you understand how it looks.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

Because for the first time, Ethan saw his father not as a liar or a hero.

Just a man who had made mistakes.

Daniel picked up the photograph.

“There’s something strange.””

Everyone looked.

He pointed to the background.

“There’s another person.””

Ethan leaned closer.

A shadow appeared near the building entrance.

Someone watching.

Michael’s expression changed.

“You weren’t supposed to notice that.””

Ethan looked at him.

“What?””

Michael took the photograph.

“That person was the reason your mother disappeared.””

Richard stood.

“Who?””

Michael looked toward Sophia.

And Ethan immediately knew.

“No.””

Sophia shook her head.

“Why are you looking at me?””

Michael walked closer.

“Because your father knew him.””

Sophia’s eyes widened.

“My father?””

Michael nodded.

“The man in the photograph is Edward Whitmore.””

Richard froze.

Ethan stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Michael looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because that’s Sophia’s father.””

The room went silent.

Sophia looked sick.

“No.””

Richard whispered:

“Edward?””

Michael nodded.

“Your mother discovered that Edward wasn’t just helping with the money.””

Ethan looked at Sophia.

“He was involved in everything.””

Sophia stepped back.

“No.””

Her voice became desperate.

“No, my father hated your family.””

Michael smiled sadly.

“That’s exactly why he was dangerous.””

Ethan looked at his wife.

For the first time, he saw something different.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Pain.

Real pain.

Sophia covered her mouth.

“My father…”

She couldn’t finish.

Then her phone buzzed.

Everyone turned.

A new message.

Sophia looked at it.

Her hands started shaking.

Ethan noticed.

“Who is it?””

She slowly handed him the phone.

The message was from an unknown number.

One sentence.

*Stop searching for the truth, or you’ll lose what your father couldn’t save.*

Ethan looked at Sophia.

Then at Richard.

“What does this mean?””

Nobody answered.

Until Richard quietly said:

“It means someone else is still protecting the secret.””

A sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

Everyone looked toward the second floor.

May you like

Ethan whispered:

“Who else is in this house?””
