Chapter 14: The Daughter Who Lost Everything

Sophia sat on the floor.

She didn’t cry at first.

She simply stared at the letter.

Like her entire life had been erased in one moment.

“No.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“No, my father loved me.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew what to say.

Ethan looked at her.

A few hours earlier, he had believed she was an innocent woman attacked by his father.

Then he believed she was a manipulator seeking revenge.

Now he saw something else.

A person destroyed by the same lies that had destroyed him.

Richard slowly walked toward her.

“Sophia.””

She looked up.

“Don’t.””

Her voice cracked.

“Don’t pretend you understand.””

Richard stopped.

“You spent thirty years knowing the truth.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You spent thirty years knowing a part of it.””

The words silenced him.

Sophia wiped her face.

“I hated you because I thought you destroyed my father.””

Richard looked down.

“I know.””

“I married Ethan because I wanted answers.””

Ethan looked away.

The honesty hurt.

“I told myself I was doing the right thing.””

Sophia’s voice became quieter.

“But somewhere along the way, I stopped caring who I hurt.””

Ethan looked at her.

She wasn’t asking for forgiveness.

She knew she didn’t deserve it.

Clara picked up the letter.

“There is more.””

Everyone turned.

The old woman pointed to the bottom.

A final paragraph.

Ethan read it aloud.

Richard, if Sophia ever finds this, tell her the truth. Her father was manipulated too. He was not the beginning of the evil. He was only another person used by someone smarter.

Daniel frowned.

“Someone smarter?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Michael shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Richard stared.

“What?””

Michael looked toward the window.

“Because the person who controlled everything was supposed to be dead.””

Ethan’s heart sank.

“Who?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Then the lights went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

Someone screamed.

A second later, the emergency lights turned on.

And the front door was open.

Everyone froze.

Richard moved first.

“Stay here.””

Ethan grabbed his arm.

“No.””

This time Richard didn’t argue.

They walked together.

Outside, the rain had stopped.

A figure stood near the driveway.

Waiting.

Richard stopped.

Because he knew the person.

“Victor.””

The man stepped into the light.

Older.

But alive.

Ethan stared.

Another dead man.

Another impossible truth.

Victor Hale smiled.

“I see you finally found the letter.””

Michael stepped forward.

“You were supposed to be gone.””

Victor laughed.

“So were you.””

Sophia stared at him.

“You…”

Victor looked at her.

“Your father was weak.””

The words destroyed her.

“You used him.””

“Yes.””

No hesitation.

No regret.

Ethan felt disgust.

Victor looked at him.

“Your mother was always too curious.””

Richard’s fists tightened.

“You killed her.””

Victor tilted his head.

“No.””

Everyone froze.

“I didn’t kill her.””

He smiled.

“I gave the order.””

The words hung in the air.

Ethan felt his stomach turn.

Victor continued.

“But your mother had one final mistake.””

He looked directly at Ethan.

“She trusted your father.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You don’t get to rewrite history.””

Victor smiled.

“History is written by whoever survives.””

Then he pulled out a small device.

A recording.

“Before you accuse me, listen.””

He pressed play.

A voice filled the night.

His mother’s voice.

But this time, different words.

“Richard, if you are hearing this, I know what you did.””

Ethan looked at his father.

His heart stopped.

May you like

Victor smiled.

“Now you’ll finally know the truth.””
