Chapter 3: The Secret Buried for Thirty Years

The room felt smaller after Richard’s words.

Ethan stood in the middle of his home, surrounded by the people he thought he understood.

But suddenly, everything felt unfamiliar.

His father.

His wife.

Even his childhood memories.

“What do you mean she didn’t leave us?”” Ethan asked.

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

He walked to the old wooden chair near the window and slowly sat down.

The same chair he had repaired three times because Ethan’s mother used to sit there every Sunday morning.

Sophia watched him carefully.

She was no longer crying.

That frightened Ethan.

Because the tears had disappeared the moment the truth became dangerous.

“Dad,” Ethan said.

“Look at me.””

Richard lifted his eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Richard looked away.

“Because I was protecting you.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No. You were hiding something from me.””

Richard accepted the accusation.

Maybe because he deserved it.

Maybe because after tonight, he knew his son had a right to be angry.

“When your mother died,” Richard said slowly, “you were twelve years old.””

Ethan remembered.

The hospital.

The white walls.

His father sitting beside him, holding his hand.

He remembered being told his mother had left because she couldn’t handle their family problems.

That memory had always hurt.

“You told me she abandoned us,” Ethan whispered.

Richard’s eyes filled with sadness.

“I lied.””

Nobody moved.

“I lied because the truth was worse.””

Sophia folded her arms.

“Tell him.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You knew?””

Sophia smiled faintly.

Not kindly.

“You should have asked more questions about your own family.””

Richard looked at Sophia with disappointment.

“This is what you wanted.””

“What I wanted was justice,” Sophia replied.

Ethan stared at her.

“Justice?””

She walked closer.

“Your father has spent thirty years pretending he’s a good man.””

Richard’s face tightened.

“I never said I was perfect.””

“No,” Sophia said.

“You just let everyone believe you were.””

Ethan looked between them.

“Someone explain what is happening.””

Richard reached for the folder he had been holding earlier.

The same folder that appeared in the security footage.

He opened it slowly.

Inside were old photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

He pulled out one photograph and handed it to Ethan.

It showed his mother standing beside another man.

Ethan frowned.

“Who is this?””

Richard’s voice became quiet.

“That is Daniel Hayes.””

Sophia watched Ethan carefully.

“And he was your mother’s brother.””

Ethan looked confused.

“My mother didn’t have a brother.””

Richard looked down.

“Your mother told everyone she didn’t.””

The confusion on Ethan’s face turned into frustration.

“Why?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Because before he could, Sophia spoke.

“Because your mother was hiding her real family.””

Ethan looked at her.

“And you know all this because?””

Sophia’s silence was the answer.

Richard noticed it too.

“You didn’t discover this by accident.””

Sophia’s expression hardened.

“No.””

“Then why?””

Sophia looked at Ethan.

And for the first time, Ethan saw something behind her anger.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Because Daniel Hayes left something behind,” she said.

Richard stood immediately.

“No.””

Ethan looked at his father.

“What?””

Sophia smiled slightly.

“A secret account. A hidden inheritance. Something your father never wanted you to know existed.””

Richard’s voice became sharp.

“Enough.””

But Sophia continued.

“Your mother wasn’t poor when she died, Ethan.””

The room went silent.

“She left millions behind.””

Ethan stared at his father.

His father stared back.

And for the second time that night, Ethan felt the ground disappear beneath him.

“Is that true?””

Richard didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Ethan stepped away.

All his life, he thought his father was the honest one.

All his life, he thought Sophia was the person who understood him.

Now he didn’t know who had betrayed him first.

Then Richard’s phone rang.

Everyone looked at the screen.

Richard picked it up.

His face changed as soon as he saw the name.

Ethan noticed.

“Who is it?””

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

“It’s someone who should have been dead for thirty years.””

The room went completely still.

Because on the screen was a name Ethan had never heard before.

May you like

But one his father clearly feared.

*Daniel Hayes.*
