Chapter 2: The Video She Never Expected
The security footage played silently on the screen.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody blinked.
The timestamp appeared in the corner.
7:42 PM.
Ethan watched his own living room appear from a different angle.
He saw his father walk into the hallway.
Calm.
Slow.
Confused.
Exactly as Richard had described.
Then Sophia entered the frame.
Ethan’s stomach tightened.
His wife looked completely different from the woman standing beside him now.
On the recording, Sophia wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t afraid.
She was looking around.
Checking.
Almost like she was making sure nobody was watching.
Ethan stepped closer to the monitor.
“What is this?””
Sophia’s face turned pale.
“Ethan…”
But he didn’t look at her.
He kept watching.
On the screen, Richard stood several feet away from Sophia.
His hands were holding a folder.
He said something the camera couldn’t hear.
Sophia looked toward the hallway.
Then she walked closer to the mirror.
Slowly.
Carefully.
She reached up and pulled at her own hair.
Ethan stopped breathing.
“No…”
The word escaped his mouth.
Sophia grabbed the front of her blouse.
And tore the buttons away herself.
One.
Two.
Three.
The sound was small.
But in the silence of the room, everyone heard it.
Richard closed his eyes.
He had known.
But seeing it was different.
Seeing his son watch the truth unfold was painful.
Sophia stepped backward on the video.
Then she changed her expression.
A switch.
Like someone turning off a light.
Her face transformed from calm to terrified.
And then—
“HELP! GET AWAY FROM ME!””
The same scream filled the room.
The same scream that had destroyed Richard’s reputation.
The same scream that had caused Ethan to raise his hand against his own father.
The footage continued.
Ethan watched himself running into the room.
He watched himself look at Sophia.
Look at Richard.
And make a decision without asking a single question.
His face became empty.
His own actions shocked him.
Then came the slap.
The entire family watched silently.
Nobody looked at Sophia anymore.
They looked at Ethan.
Richard walked away from the screen.
He didn’t need to see more.
“I told you,” he whispered.
Ethan didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed locked on the footage.
“How long…” Ethan said quietly.
Nobody understood.
He turned toward Sophia.
“How long were you planning this?””
Sophia’s lips trembled.
“I can explain.””
Ethan laughed once.
A broken, painful sound.
“Explain what? The part where you ripped your own clothes? The part where you screamed? Or the part where you watched me hit my father?””
Sophia’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t think you would actually do that.””
The sentence made everyone freeze.
Richard looked back.
Ethan’s expression changed.
“What did you say?””
Sophia realized her mistake too late.
“I mean… I didn’t think things would go this far.””
Ethan walked slowly toward her.
“Why?””
Sophia looked away.
“Because I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
She didn’t answer.
Richard stepped forward.
“Sophia wanted something from this family.””
Everyone turned.
Sophia glared at him.
“Don’t.””
Richard’s voice remained calm.
“She has been asking questions about my estate for months.””
Ethan looked confused.
“My estate?””
Richard nodded.
“The house. My investments. The trust I created for the grandchildren.””
Sophia’s face hardened.
“That’s not true.””
Richard looked at her.
“Then why did you search through my office last month?””
Ethan turned toward Sophia.
“What?””
The room went silent.
Sophia’s expression changed.
For the first time, the perfect image she had created began cracking.
“I was trying to understand your father,” she said.
Richard shook his head.
“No. You were trying to understand what you could take.””
Ethan looked devastated.
He remembered every conversation.
Every time Sophia asked about Richard’s health.
Every time she asked if he had changed his will.
Every time she suddenly became extra kind to his father.
But there was still one question burning in his mind.
Why frame Richard?
Why risk destroying an old man’s life?
Sophia wiped her tears.
And then she said something that made Ethan’s blood run cold.
“Because your father knows what really happened to your mother.””
Richard’s face changed instantly.
Ethan froze.
“My mother?””
Sophia looked directly at Richard.
“You never told him, did you?””
Richard said nothing.
And that silence frightened Ethan more than any lie.
Because his father looked like a man who had been carrying a secret for decades.
A secret that Sophia somehow knew.
Ethan stepped back.
“What happened to Mom?””
Richard stared at the floor.

Then quietly answered:
“Your mother didn’t leave us the way you were told.””
