Chapter 5: The Night Everything Changed
The rain started outside.
Heavy drops hit the windows, filling the silence inside the house.
Ethan stood in front of his father, waiting.
Waiting for the answer that Richard had spent three decades avoiding.
“Where were you?”” Ethan asked.
Richard didn’t respond.
“Dad.””
The older man looked exhausted.
Not guilty.
Not yet.
Just tired.
“I was at the hospital.””
Ethan frowned.
“The hospital?””
Richard nodded.
“The night your mother disappeared, she called me.””
Sophia watched closely.
Ethan noticed.
“You know this story.””
Sophia looked away.
Richard continued.
“She told me she had found something dangerous.””
“What kind of something?””
Richard looked toward the old photograph on the table.
“The company records.””
Ethan remembered what Daniel said.
Someone had stolen millions.
His mother had discovered it.
“She wanted to meet me,” Richard said.
“She said she didn’t trust anyone else.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Then what happened?””
Richard swallowed.
“I arrived late.””
“How late?””
Richard’s eyes lowered.
“Twenty minutes.””
The answer felt strange.
Ethan waited.
“And?””
Richard’s voice became quieter.
“When I arrived, she was gone.””
Sophia interrupted.
“That’s not the whole story.””
Richard looked at her.
“No.””
“It isn’t.””
Ethan turned toward Sophia.
“Then tell me.””
Sophia hesitated.
For the first time, she looked uncertain.
“I don’t know everything.””
Richard stared at her.
“But you know enough to manipulate my son.””
Sophia ignored him.
“I found Daniel because I was searching for answers too.””
Ethan shook his head.
“Why?””
“Because your mother’s death was never properly investigated.””
Richard looked angry.
“Because there was nothing to investigate.””
Sophia stepped forward.
“That’s what you told everyone.””
Ethan looked at his father.
“Did police believe you?””
Richard didn’t answer.
That silence made Ethan’s chest tighten.
“They questioned me,” Richard finally admitted.
“About what?””
Richard looked at the floor.
“About whether I knew she planned to leave.””
Ethan froze.
“You told them she left willingly?””
Richard’s eyes filled with pain.
“I didn’t know what else to say.””
Sophia crossed her arms.
“You let everyone believe she abandoned her son.””
Richard’s voice broke.
“I was trying to protect Ethan from a family war.””
“A family war?””
Sophia laughed.
“You mean the truth.””
Before Richard could answer, the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
Ethan’s heart jumped.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Holding a worn leather bag.
Nobody spoke.
Richard slowly stood.
“Daniel.””
The man looked exactly like the photograph.
Older.
But unmistakably the same person.
Ethan couldn’t move.
His entire life had been built around people who were either hiding the truth or revealing it at the perfect moment.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
Ethan stared.
“You’re really my uncle?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why disappear?””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“Ask him.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
Daniel stepped inside.
“You owe him the truth.””
Ethan’s voice became sharper.
“I’m standing right here.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Your mother discovered that someone in your father’s company was stealing money.””
Ethan nodded.
“I know.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“You don’t.””
He opened the leather bag.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Old.
Yellowed.
Carefully preserved.
“Your mother discovered who was responsible.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Who?””
Daniel looked directly at Richard.
“The same person who convinced everyone your mother was gone forever.””
Ethan turned toward his father.
Richard’s face changed.
But before he could speak, Daniel pulled out one final document.
A handwritten letter.
Ethan recognized the handwriting immediately.
His mother’s.
Daniel handed it to him.
“She wrote this the night she disappeared.””
Ethan’s fingers trembled as he opened it.
The first line was enough to make his blood run cold.
*Richard, if you are reading this, it means I was right not to trust you.*
Ethan looked up.
His father looked devastated.
May you like
And Daniel whispered:
“Now you finally know why your father never wanted you to see that letter.””
