Chapter 12: The Witness From the Past

The footsteps upstairs were slow.

Careful.

Everyone stood frozen.

Richard moved toward the staircase.

“Stay here.””

Ethan grabbed his arm.

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

For years, Ethan had been the child his father protected.

Tonight, that changed.

“I’m coming with you.””

Richard studied his son.

Then quietly nodded.

Together, they walked upstairs.

Behind them, Daniel, Michael, and Sophia followed.

Nobody trusted anyone enough to stay alone.

The hallway was dark.

The old wooden floor creaked beneath their feet.

At the end of the hallway was the guest room.

The door was slightly open.

Richard stopped.

“I locked this room.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Why?””

Richard didn’t answer.

He pushed the door open.

Inside, everything seemed normal.

Until Ethan saw the desk.

A stack of papers had been moved.

Someone had searched through them.

Michael stepped inside.

“They’re looking for something.””

Daniel looked around.

“What?””

Michael pointed.

“The original documents.””

Richard’s face changed.

“What original documents?””

Michael looked at him.

“The ones your wife left behind.””

Ethan turned.

“My mother?””

Before anyone could answer, Sophia gasped.

She was looking at the window.

“What?””

Everyone followed her gaze.

A small piece of fabric was caught on the broken latch.

Sophia touched it.

Then froze.

“I know this.””

Ethan looked at her.

“What?””

She stared at the fabric.

“This was my father’s jacket.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard looked shocked.

“Your father was here?””

Sophia shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“He couldn’t be.””

Then a sound came from the closet.

A soft movement.

Everyone turned.

Michael stepped forward.

“Come out.””

Silence.

Then a voice answered.

“I didn’t want anyone to know I was here.””

Ethan felt his heart stop.

Because the voice belonged to someone he recognized.

Someone from his childhood.

Someone he thought was gone forever.

The closet door slowly opened.

An elderly woman stepped out.

Richard immediately froze.

“No…”

Ethan looked at his father.

“Who is that?””

Richard couldn’t speak.

The woman looked at Ethan.

Tears filled her eyes.

“You look exactly like your mother.””

Ethan stared.

“Who are you?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“My name is Clara.””

Richard whispered:

“Your mother’s best friend.””

Ethan frowned.

“But she died.””

Clara shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Richard.

“You told him I was gone too.””

Richard looked devastated.

“I thought you were safe.””

Clara walked forward.

“I was hiding.””

Ethan felt overwhelmed.

Another secret.

Another person who had disappeared.

“Why?””

Clara looked at the documents on the desk.

“Because I knew who was responsible.””

Everyone became silent.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Who?””

Clara looked at Michael.

Then Richard.

Then Sophia.

Finally, she looked directly at Ethan.

“Your mother wasn’t killed because she found the money.””

Ethan held his breath.

“She was killed because she discovered who owned the money.””

Richard frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Clara reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small recorder.

“I kept this for thirty years.””

Ethan stared.

“What’s on it?””

Clara pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then a familiar voice played.

A voice Ethan had never heard before.

His mother’s voice.

“If you’re hearing this, I’m already gone.””

Ethan covered his mouth.

The recording continued.

“But before anyone blames Richard, you need to know something.””

Everyone looked at Richard.

The next words changed everything.

“Richard was trying to save me.””

The room went completely silent.

And then his mother said:

“The person who betrayed us was someone I loved like family.””

The recording stopped.

Because the battery died.

Nobody moved.

Ethan looked at the empty recorder.

Then at everyone around him.

Someone in the family had betrayed his mother.

But now he knew one thing.

May you like

It wasn’t the person he had spent all night accusing.

It was someone else.
