Chapter 10: The Brother Who Returned From the Grave
The door opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The man standing outside looked older than the photographs, but there was no mistaking him.
The same sharp eyes.
The same face Richard remembered from thirty years ago.
Michael Whitmore.
The brother everyone believed was dead.
Ethan stared at him.
His mind struggled to accept what his eyes were seeing.
A dead man had just walked into his home.
Michael stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
“Hello, Richard.””
Richard’s hands tightened.
“You’re alive.””
Michael smiled faintly.
“That’s usually what people say when they see someone they buried.””
Sophia stepped backward.
“You knew he was alive.””
Everyone looked at Richard.
But Richard shook his head.
“No.””
Michael laughed quietly.
“Still protecting your image after all these years.””
Ethan moved between them.
“Who are you?””
Michael looked at him.
For a moment, his expression softened.
“I’m your uncle.””
Ethan felt nothing.
Not warmth.
Not family.
Only confusion.
“My entire life, I thought I had one uncle.””
Michael glanced at Daniel.
“And he made sure you only knew the uncle who disappeared.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Don’t put this on me.””
Michael smiled.
“Still playing the hero?””
Richard stepped forward.
“Why are you here?””
Michael looked around the room.
“Because my name came up.””
He noticed the documents on the table.
The old letters.
The financial records.
“You found them.””
Nobody answered.
Michael nodded.
“I knew eventually someone would.””
Ethan stared at him.
“You know about my mother.””
The smile disappeared.
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
Ethan stepped closer.
“What happened to her?””
Michael looked at Richard.
“Ask your father.””
Richard’s face darkened.
“Enough.””
“No,” Ethan said.
His voice was stronger now.
“No more secrets.””
Michael looked pleased.
“Good. You finally understand.””
He walked toward the table and picked up the old letter.
“Your mother was smarter than all of us.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“Don’t touch that.””
Michael ignored him.
“She discovered the missing money.””
Ethan watched him.
“And you were involved.””
Michael smiled.
“You think this is simple?””
“No,” Ethan replied.
“I think everyone here has lied to me.””
Michael nodded.
“That part is true.””
Sophia stared at him.
“Did you kill her?””
The room went silent.
Michael looked at her.
Interesting.
“You still believe that story?””
Sophia’s face tightened.
“Answer me.””
Michael placed the letter down.
“I didn’t kill your mother.””
Richard looked away.
Ethan noticed.
His father believed him.
Or at least believed part of him.
“Then what happened?””
Michael walked toward the window.
“Your mother discovered the truth about the company.””
Daniel interrupted.
“The theft.””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you?””
Michael looked at him.
“I took money.””
Nobody expected the honesty.
Ethan stared.
“You admit it?””
“I admit what I did.””
Michael turned.
“But I didn’t work alone.””
The room became silent.
Richard’s expression changed.
“You’re lying.””
Michael looked at him.
“Am I?””
Ethan looked between them.
“Who helped you?””
Michael didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Sophia.
Her face immediately changed.
Ethan noticed.
Again.
Another reaction.
Another secret.
“Sophia,” Ethan said quietly.
She looked at him.
“I don’t know what he’s talking about.””
Michael laughed.
“You really didn’t tell him?””
Ethan felt his chest tighten.
“Tell me what?””
Sophia looked at Michael.
“Stop.””
Michael ignored her.
“Your wife’s father wasn’t just an accountant.””
Richard stared.
“What are you saying?””
Michael smiled.
“He was my partner.””
The words hit like a wave.
Sophia shook her head.
“No.””
Michael continued.
“He helped move the money.””
Ethan looked at Sophia.
She looked genuinely shocked.
Which made everything even more confusing.
“My father?””
Michael nodded.
“He was the one who kept the records.””
Sophia’s voice broke.
“You’re lying.””
“Maybe.””
Michael shrugged.
“But you should ask yourself why your father disappeared after your mother vanished.””
Sophia froze.
Ethan looked at her.
“What?””
“My father died.””
Michael smiled.
“Did he?””
Sophia’s face turned pale.
“No…”
Richard looked at Michael.
“You’re playing with people’s pain.””
Michael stepped closer.
“Am I?””
Then he pulled out a small envelope.
“I came here because I found something.””
Ethan stared at the envelope.
“What?””
Michael looked directly at him.
“Proof of who really betrayed your mother.””
Richard immediately said:
“Don’t open it.””
Everyone turned.
Ethan looked at his father.
“Why?””
Richard had no answer.
And that silence was louder than anything.
Michael placed the envelope on the table.
“Your father knows exactly what is inside.””
Ethan reached for it.
His fingers touched the paper.
Then Michael whispered:
“Before you open it, ask yourself one question.””
Ethan looked at him.
“What?””
May you like
Michael smiled.
“Are you ready to lose the last person you still trust?””
