The Daughter He Never Knew / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8: The Woman Who Never Died

For five years, everyone believed Eleanor Cole was dead.

Nathan had grown up with that story.

A tragic illness.

A sudden decline.

A funeral when he was only twelve years old.

He had carried that loss his entire life.

But now she stood in front of us.

Alive.

Older.

Calm.

Like she had simply returned from a vacation.

Nathan couldn’t move.

“Mom?””

The word barely left his mouth.

Eleanor looked at him.

There was no surprise in her eyes.

No emotion.

Only calculation.

“Hello, Nathan.””

The flashlight shook in his hand.

“No.””

He stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

Eleanor sighed.

“I knew you would say that.””

I pulled Lily closer.

The woman who had supposedly died twelve years ago had been hiding.

And somehow, she was connected to everything.

The fake documents.

Richard.

Victoria.

The lies.

Nathan’s voice became angry.

“You’re dead.””

“I needed people to believe that.””

“Why?””

Eleanor looked around the hidden room.

“Because your father became dangerous.””

I almost laughed.

“Your husband threatened me.””

Her eyes moved to mine.

“I know.””

Those two words hit harder than anything else.

Nathan looked at her.

“You knew?””

Eleanor nodded.

“I knew everything.””

The room went silent.

My chest tightened.

“You watched him destroy my life.””

“I tried to stop him.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You disappeared.””

Eleanor looked down.

“For a reason.””

Nathan stepped forward.

“Tell me the truth.””

For the first time, her expression softened.

“I was never dead.””

“Then where were you?””

“Trying to undo what your father started.””

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

Eleanor looked at the files around us.

“Your father built this empire by collecting secrets.””

She pointed toward the cabinets.

“He controlled people by knowing their weaknesses.””

Her eyes moved to Lily.

“And when he discovered Grace was pregnant, he saw an opportunity.””

Nathan frowned.

“What opportunity?””

“To control you.””

The words hung in the air.

Eleanor continued.

“Your father knew you loved Grace. He knew you would leave everything behind for her.””

I looked at Nathan.

Because that was true.

He would have.

“And he couldn’t allow that,” Eleanor said.

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“So he forced Grace away.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you stop him?””

Eleanor looked away.

“Because I was afraid.””

That answer surprised everyone.

She looked at me.

“I had spent years living with a man who knew how to destroy anyone who challenged him.””

I understood fear.

But I wasn’t ready to forgive.

“You let me suffer.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

Nathan turned away.

The betrayal was too much.

His father.

His mother.

Everyone had made choices for him.

Everyone except him.

Then Daniel noticed something on the desk.

“Wait.””

He picked up a small recorder.

“This was hidden here.””

Eleanor’s face changed.

“No.””

Nathan looked at her.

“What?””

She stepped forward.

“Don’t play that.””

That reaction told us everything.

Nathan pressed the button.

Richard’s voice filled the room.

“If you are hearing this, then my plan failed.””

Everyone froze.

The recording continued.

“Eleanor will tell you she wanted to protect you.””

A pause.

“She is lying.””

Nathan looked at his mother.

Richard’s voice continued.

“She was not my victim.””

Eleanor’s face went pale.

“She was my partner.””

The room seemed to stop.

Nathan stared at her.

“No.””

Richard continued.

“She helped me remove Grace from your life.””

I looked at Eleanor.

“You lied.””

She shook her head.

“No. It’s not what you think.””

But the recording wasn’t finished.

“And when she realized I intended to take Lily away permanently…”

Richard’s voice lowered.

“She betrayed me.””

Nobody spoke.

Nathan stared at the recorder.

“What did you do?””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“I saved Lily.””

Nathan looked shocked.

“What?””

The recording ended.

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Then Eleanor whispered:

“Your father never planned to let Lily live a normal life.””

I held my daughter tighter.

“What does that mean?””

May you like

Eleanor looked directly at me.

“He had another reason for wanting your child.””
