The Daughter He Never Knew / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14: The Truth That Set Us Free

The video was only three minutes long.

But it felt like five years.

There I was.

Young.

Pregnant.

Terrified.

Standing in my old apartment.

Richard stood across from me.

But something was different.

He wasn’t threatening me.

He was angry.

Desperate.

“I know what you’re planning,” I said in the video.

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know anything.””

“You’re going to take my baby.””

“No.””

His voice changed.

“I’m trying to stop someone else from doing it.””

I stared at the screen.

I remembered that night differently now.

I remembered his words.

But fear had changed how I understood them.

The video continued.

Richard placed a folder on the table.

“Your child is in danger.””

I heard my younger voice.

“From you?””

A long silence.

Then Richard answered:

“From everyone.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Richard.

“What was that?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

For once, he looked tired.

“I made mistakes.””

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“That’s one way to describe it.””

Richard looked at him.

“I thought control was the only way to protect my family.””

“You destroyed it.””

Richard lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

That confession surprised everyone.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is the evidence?””

Richard looked at him.

“Everything is in the drive.””

Eleanor frowned.

“What drive?””

“The one I gave Thomas.””

Thomas looked confused.

“You never gave me anything.””

Richard smiled slightly.

“Because I knew you would try to destroy it.””

Thomas’s face changed.

“You’re lying.””

Richard looked toward me.

“No.””

He pointed.

“Grace has it.””

I froze.

“What?””

Richard nodded.

“Your father hid it inside something you kept.””

My mind raced.

Something I kept.

Something from five years ago.

Then I remembered.

The necklace.

The small silver necklace my father gave me before he disappeared.

I had worn it every day.

Even after everything.

Because it was the last thing I had from him.

I pulled it from beneath my shirt.

Everyone stared.

Nathan looked at me.

“You have it?””

I nodded slowly.

Richard smiled.

“Open it.””

I had never tried.

I always thought it was just a necklace.

But when Daniel examined it, he found a tiny hidden compartment.

Inside was a small memory chip.

The room went silent.

Thomas whispered:

“He really did it.””

Daniel connected it to a laptop.

Files appeared.

Thousands of documents.

Bank transfers.

Recordings.

Photographs.

Everything.

Richard’s empire.

Built on blackmail.

Fraud.

Manipulation.

And one final file.

The title was:

Project Lily.

My blood went cold.

Nathan opened it.

Inside were Richard’s plans.

Not just to take Lily.

To use her.

To control the future of the Cole family.

Nathan closed the laptop.

“I’m going to destroy you.””

Richard looked at him.

“You won’t.””

“Why?””

“Because you’re still my son.””

Nathan stepped closer.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I’m not.””

That was the moment Richard lost.

Not because he was arrested.

Not because the evidence existed.

Because Nathan finally stopped needing his approval.

Police arrived twenty minutes later.

Richard Cole was taken away.

Thomas gave his statement.

Eleanor did too.

Victoria was arrested for her role in creating false documents, but before she left, she stopped beside me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

For once, she wasn’t pretending.

“I was selfish.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

Then she walked away.

Months passed after that night.

The world learned the truth.

The Cole empire collapsed.

The people who helped Richard were exposed.

And for the first time in years, I slept without fear.

But healing wasn’t instant.

Nathan and I had to rebuild.

Not as the young couple we were.

As the people we became.

One evening, I found him sitting outside with Lily.

She was teaching him how to draw.

“You’re terrible at that,” she said.

Nathan laughed.

“I know.””

“You made the dog look like a potato.””

“I was going for artistic.””

I smiled.

And for the first time in five years, I felt peace.

Then Lily looked at me.

“Mommy?””

“Yes?””

“Are we a family now?””

I looked at Nathan.

He looked at me.

And I answered:

“Yes.””

But I didn’t know yet that our story had one final chapter.

Because the next morning, I received a letter.

No name.

No return address.

May you like

Only one sentence.

*You know the truth about Nathan’s family. But you still don’t know the truth about yours.*
