The Daughter He Never Knew / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11: The Father I Never Knew

I couldn’t sleep.

How could I?

The man I spent years believing abandoned me had been dead all along.

The man I thought was Richard Cole’s victim had been hidden beneath someone else’s identity.

Every memory I had was suddenly uncertain.

Every story I had been told had cracks.

I sat beside Lily’s bed, watching her sleep.

She looked peaceful.

She didn’t know about lies.

She didn’t know about revenge.

She didn’t know adults could spend years destroying each other.

She only knew she had a father now.

A real one.

At least, that was what I hoped.

A quiet knock came at the door.

Nathan.

He stood there holding two cups of coffee.

“You should sleep.””

I smiled sadly.

“So should you.””

He entered and sat beside the window.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For all the years you carried this alone.””

I looked down.

“You didn’t know.””

“But I should have.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I spent years angry at you.””

“I know.””

“I thought you left me.””

I swallowed.

“I thought you forgot me.””

Nathan looked at me.

“I never forgot you.””

The room became quiet.

Then he continued.

“I searched for you.””

My eyes widened.

“What?””

“After you disappeared.””

I stared at him.

“My father told me you ran away.””

His jaw tightened.

“I didn’t believe him.””

“Then why didn’t you find me?””

“Because every lead disappeared.””

He looked down.

“Every address. Every phone number. Every record.””

My heart hurt.

“Richard erased me.””

Nathan nodded.

“Yes.””

The next morning, Daniel brought us the results from the hospital.

Richard was alive.

Thomas Bennett had been the man buried in his place.

But the strangest discovery was this:

The body had been identified because of a hidden medical record.

A record created by someone who knew the truth.

Someone who wanted it found.

“Who released it?”” Nathan asked.

Daniel shook his head.

“We don’t know.””

I looked at the documents.

“But someone wanted us to find out.””

“Yes.””

That terrified me.

Because whoever was helping us was also watching us.

Then Victoria arrived.

I immediately stood.

Nathan looked surprised.

“What are you doing here?””

She looked exhausted.

“I know who sent the messages.””

Everyone became silent.

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“Why should we believe you?””

“Because I was there.””

I watched her carefully.

“Where?””

“The night Richard disappeared.””

Nathan stepped forward.

“What?””

Victoria took a breath.

“My father helped Richard fake his death.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Richard was afraid.””

I almost laughed.

“Richard Cole was afraid?””

Victoria nodded.

“Of someone.””

Nathan looked at her.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

And my blood went cold.

“Your father.””

I stared.

“My father was dead.””

“No.””

Victoria shook her head.

“Thomas Bennett wasn’t killed.””

She looked toward the window.

“He escaped.””

Nathan frowned.

“Then who was buried?””

Victoria whispered:

“Someone Richard sacrificed.””

The room felt colder.

I thought of the body.

The funeral.

The newspaper.

The lies.

Everything had been staged.

Victoria reached into her bag.

She placed a small envelope on the table.

“I kept this because I was scared.””

Nathan opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Richard Cole and Thomas Bennett standing together.

But there was something else.

A third person.

A young woman.

I recognized her immediately.

My mother.

My hands began shaking.

“No.””

Victoria looked at me.

“She knew.””

“Knew what?””

Victoria’s voice became barely audible.

“Your mother knew Richard and Thomas switched identities.””

I looked at Nathan.

Then the photograph.

My entire childhood was built on a lie.

Again.

Nathan picked up the picture.

On the back was a handwritten message.

Three names.

One warning.

Richard Cole.

Thomas Bennett.

Eleanor Cole.

The truth will destroy them all.

Nathan looked at me.

“Grace…”

Before he could finish, the front door downstairs slammed open.

Security shouted.

Then a man’s voice echoed through the mansion.

“Grace Bennett.””

Everyone froze.

Because I knew that voice.

A voice I hadn’t heard since childhood.

May you like

A voice I thought I would never hear again.

My father.
