The Daughter He Never Knew / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The kitchen felt smaller after Victoria’s confession.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Even the officers seemed unsure what they had just heard.

Nathan stared at her.

“You were there?””

Victoria lowered her phone.

“Yes.””

My fingers tightened around Lily’s hand.

Five years.

Five years of nightmares.

Five years of wondering how Richard Cole had found us so quickly.

And Victoria had been there.

Nathan stepped toward her.

“Start talking.””

Victoria looked hurt.

Like she was the victim.

“I was trying to help you.””

“No,” Nathan said.

“You were hiding something.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand what Richard was like.””

I almost laughed.

Because for once, she was telling the truth.

Richard Cole had been powerful.

Controlled.

Terrifying.

But Victoria wasn’t afraid of him.

She benefited from him.

“I saw you leave that night,” Victoria said to me.

My heart stopped.

“You followed me?””

She ignored me.

“I saw Grace carrying a baby carrier.””

Nathan looked at me.

“You already knew Lily existed.””

Victoria looked away.

“Yes.””

The confession hit harder than the hockey stick.

Nathan’s voice became quiet.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Victoria swallowed.

“Because Richard told me not to.””

“And you listened?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He promised me that one day you would see I was the right person for you.””

There it was.

The truth hidden beneath years of manipulation.

Not love.

Not loyalty.

Ambition.

I looked at Nathan.

“You have to believe me now.””

He didn’t answer.

That hurt more than anger.

Because anger meant he felt something.

Silence meant he was broken.

Daniel cleared his throat.

“There’s more.””

He opened the folder again.

“Richard’s notes mention a second person.””

Nathan looked up.

“Who?””

Daniel pointed to a page.

“The person who created the fake documents.””

My stomach dropped.

The detective took the paper.

“Can we verify this?””

Daniel nodded.

“There are financial records attached.””

Nathan looked at the name.

Then his face changed.

“Impossible.””

I watched him carefully.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

The detective looked at the page.

Then at Victoria.

Then at Nathan.

“Mr. Cole…”

Nathan whispered the name.

“Evelyn Sinclair.””

Victoria’s mother.

Victoria went pale.

“My mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother received payments from Richard Cole five years ago.””

Victoria stepped back.

“No.””

She looked genuinely shocked.

For the first time, she looked less like a villain and more like someone discovering she had been used too.

Nathan noticed.

“Your mother helped my father destroy Grace’s life.””

Victoria shook her head.

“I didn’t know.””

I looked at her.

“You knew enough.””

She looked at me.

“I thought Richard was just trying to separate you from Nathan.””

“And you helped him.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“I thought he would marry me.””

The room went silent again.

Lily suddenly tugged my sleeve.

“Mommy.””

I looked down.

Her little face was exhausted.

“Can we go home?””

The question broke me.

Because I didn’t know where home was anymore.

Nathan heard her.

His expression softened.

He crouched down slowly.

“Lily.””

She looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

She studied his face.

Children have a way of seeing things adults miss.

After a moment, she asked:

“Are you really my daddy?””

Nathan’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

His voice cracked.

“I am.””

Lily looked at me.

I nodded.

Then she reached toward him.

Nathan hugged his daughter for the first time.

And watching them together almost destroyed me.

Because it was the moment I had dreamed of.

But it came surrounded by police officers, lies, and broken trust.

Later that night, after statements were taken, Nathan found me alone in the hallway.

“You should have told me.””

I looked away.

“I wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

I swallowed.

“Because your father made sure I believed you would hate me.””

Nathan stepped closer.

“My father is dead.””

“But his damage wasn’t.””

He had no answer.

For a moment, we just stood there.

Two people who had lost five years.

Then Nathan’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?””

He answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

Nathan’s face slowly lost all color.

“What did you say?””

I watched him.

“What’s wrong?””

He lowered the phone.

“It’s the hospital.””

My heart tightened.

“Why?””

Nathan looked at me.

“They found someone who was listed as missing five years ago.””

A cold feeling spread through my body.

“Who?””

Nathan stared at the floor.

Then he whispered the name.

“Richard Cole.””

My blood froze.

Because Richard Cole was supposed to be dead.

May you like

And if he was alive…

He knew exactly where Lily had been hiding all these years.
