The Daughter He Never Knew / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

Richard Cole was dead.

I had seen the newspaper article.

I had watched the funeral coverage online from a small apartment two states away, holding newborn Lily in my arms while strangers talked about the billionaire who had built an empire and left behind a complicated legacy.

I remembered feeling relief.

Not happiness.

Not revenge.

Just relief.

Because the man who had stolen my future could no longer reach me.

But now Nathan was standing in front of me, pale and frozen, telling me the impossible.

“They found my father.””

The hallway seemed to tilt.

I grabbed the wall for support.

“That can’t be true.””

Nathan looked at me.

“I know.””

“No,” I whispered.

“You told me he died.””

“I went to his funeral.””

His voice broke.

“I watched them lower the coffin.””

A million questions raced through my mind.

How?

Why?

Who was in that coffin?

And if Richard Cole had been alive all this time…

What else had he done?

Nathan’s phone rang again.

He answered immediately.

“Doctor, this is Nathan Cole.””

I watched his face as he listened.

The color drained from it.

“Yes… yes, I understand.””

A pause.

Then:

“No. Do not let him leave.””

My heart stopped.

Nathan ended the call.

“What did they say?””

He looked at me.

“He’s awake.””

The next morning, Nathan drove us to the private hospital where Richard had been taken.

I almost didn’t go.

Every part of me screamed to run.

The old fear returned.

The same fear I felt five years ago when Richard stood in my apartment doorway and calmly explained how easy it would be to destroy my life.

But then I looked at Lily sitting beside me in the car.

She was coloring a picture of three people holding hands.

A father.

A mother.

A daughter.

She deserved the truth.

Even if the truth hurt.

When we entered the hospital room, Richard Cole looked nothing like the powerful man I remembered.

He was thinner.

Older.

Connected to machines.

But his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

The second he saw me, he smiled.

Not with surprise.

With recognition.

“So,” he whispered.

His voice was weak, but the arrogance remained.

“The little girl survived.””

Nathan stepped forward.

“Stop talking like that.””

Richard looked at his son.

For a moment, something strange crossed his face.

Regret.

Or maybe guilt.

Then it disappeared.

“Nathan.””

The word sounded almost affectionate.

Almost.

“You have no idea what I did for you.””

Nathan’s fists tightened.

“You lied to me.””

“I protected you.””

“You destroyed my family.””

Richard looked at Lily.

“And yet she is alive.””

I stepped between him and my daughter.

“You stay away from her.””

Richard smiled.

“You still think you have control.””

Nathan moved closer.

“What happened five years ago?””

Richard looked at him.

“Your mother’s family wanted control of the company. Victoria’s father wanted influence. Everyone had their own plan.””

His breathing became heavier.

“But I made the mistake of believing I could control them all.””

Nathan frowned.

“What are you saying?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Victoria was never the mastermind.””

A silence filled the room.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Nathan looked confused.

“Then who was?””

Richard opened his eyes.

“The person who created the fake documents.””

The machine beside him beeped faster.

“The person who convinced you Grace abandoned you.””

My hands trembled.

“Who?””

Richard stared directly at Nathan.

“Your own mother.””

Nathan froze.

“My mother died when I was a child.””

Richard said nothing.

That silence was worse than an answer.

Nathan’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Before Richard could respond, the hospital room door opened.

A nurse rushed inside.

“Everyone needs to step back.””

The monitors began screaming.

Doctors entered.

Nathan grabbed my arm.

“Come on.””

But I couldn’t move.

I was staring at Richard Cole.

The man who had haunted my dreams.

The man who had taken five years from me.

As the doctors pushed us out, Richard reached toward me.

His lips moved.

I barely heard him.

“Grace…”

I stepped closer.

“What?””

His eyes locked onto mine.

“The baby you saved…”

My breath caught.

“What about her?””

Richard’s fingers curled against the blanket.

“She wasn’t the only child involved.””

May you like

Then the door closed.

And I was left standing in the hallway wondering what secret could possibly be worse than the one I already knew.
