The Daughter He Never Knew / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2: The Secret Inside The Safe

Nathan didn’t speak for several seconds.

He just stared at the note in his hand.

The man I remembered—the confident billionaire who could command a room with a single sentence—looked completely lost.

Victoria took a step backward.

“Nathan, you don’t understand.””

He looked up.

“Then explain.””

Her lips parted.

Nothing came out.

The detective noticed the silence.

“Mr. Cole, perhaps we should discuss this privately.””

“No,” Nathan said.

His voice was colder than I had ever heard.

“Everyone stays.””

Lily sat beside me on the couch, clutching the blanket around her shoulders.

I wanted to comfort her.

I wanted to tell her everything would be okay.

But I had learned the hardest lesson of my life:

Promises mean nothing when powerful people decide to break them.

Nathan’s attorney, Daniel Reeves, placed another file on the table.

“Your father kept records of everything.””

Nathan looked at him.

“Why?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because he knew someone might eventually discover the truth.””

Victoria’s face tightened.

“What truth?””

Daniel opened the folder.

“The truth about what happened five years ago.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Nathan looked at me.

“Grace.””

I looked back.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“Then why did you leave?””

The question broke something inside me.

Because I had carried that answer alone for five years.

Because every birthday Lily had, I wondered if I had stolen her chance to know her father.

Because every night, I wondered if Nathan hated me.

I took a slow breath.

“Your father came to my apartment the night I found out I was pregnant.””

Nathan’s expression changed.

“My father knew?””

I nodded.

“He knew before you did.””

Five years earlier, I had been twenty-four and terrified.

Nathan and I had been planning our future.

We talked about baby names.

We talked about houses.

We talked about growing old together.

Then his father, Richard Cole, arrived at my apartment.

He didn’t come alone.

Two lawyers stood behind him.

I remembered the way he looked around my tiny living room.

Like my entire life was something dirty he had accidentally stepped into.

“You’re not going to tell Nathan,” Richard had said.

I remembered my hands shaking.

“Excuse me?””

He placed a check on my table.

A number so large it didn’t even feel real.

“Take this and disappear.””

I had pushed it back.

“I love him.””

Richard’s expression never changed.

“Love doesn’t matter.””

Nathan’s hands curled into fists as he listened.

“What did he threaten you with?””

I looked down.

“He said he would make sure I lost custody before Lily was even born.””

Nathan closed his eyes.

“He wouldn’t.””

“He did.””

Victoria suddenly interrupted.

“This is ridiculous.””

Everyone looked at her.

She crossed her arms.

“Richard hated scandals. He probably wanted to protect Nathan.””

I stared at her.

“You knew.””

Her face went still.

“What?””

“You knew about Lily.””

Nathan looked between us.

“Victoria?””

She laughed nervously.

“That’s insane.””

Daniel opened another document.

“Actually, Miss Sinclair, your father’s name appears here.””

Victoria’s confidence disappeared.

“What?””

Daniel turned the page.

“Richard Cole recorded meetings with several people involved in this situation.””

Nathan grabbed the paper.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then he looked at Victoria.

“Your father helped mine?””

She didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I remembered Victoria from years ago.

Nathan’s childhood friend.

The woman everyone expected him to marry.

The woman Richard adored.

I had always wondered why she appeared at my apartment the week after Richard’s visit.

Now I knew.

She had not come to comfort me.

She had come to warn me.

“You should leave town,” Victoria had told me back then.

I remembered asking why.

She had smiled.

“Because Nathan will choose his family over you.””

I had never forgotten those words.

Nathan looked at her now.

“Were you involved?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

His voice cut through the room.

“You were protecting yourself.””

She stepped closer.

“Nathan, please. After everything we’ve been through—”

“What everything?””

Victoria stopped.

He continued.

“The lies?””

The detective collected the documents.

“We need everyone’s statement.””

Victoria suddenly looked at me.

“You think you won?””

I felt a chill.

“What?””

She smiled faintly.

“You still don’t understand.””

Nathan noticed.

“Understand what?””

Victoria reached into her purse.

She pulled out her phone.

For a moment, I thought she was calling someone.

Then she turned the screen toward Nathan.

There was a photograph.

A photograph of me.

Taken five years earlier.

Holding newborn Lily.

Nathan stared.

“Where did you get that?””

Victoria whispered:

“Because I was there the night Grace disappeared.””

My blood turned cold.

Nathan stepped closer.

“What are you talking about?””

Victoria looked at him.

Then at me.

May you like

And she said the one sentence I never expected to hear.

“I know who really took Lily away.””
