Chapter 10: The Name On The Birth Certificate
Nathan stared at the paper like it had burned through his hands.
The room was silent except for the rain hitting the windows.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because the words written on that birth certificate had changed everything.
*Nathan Cole was never Richard Cole’s son.*
I looked at Nathan.
The man who had just discovered he had a daughter.
The man who had spent his entire life believing he knew where he came from.
Now everything beneath his feet had disappeared.
“This is fake,” Nathan said.
His voice was quiet.
Almost calm.
But I knew him well enough to hear the pain underneath.
Daniel took the certificate carefully.
“We need to verify it.””
Nathan didn’t look away from Eleanor.
“Mom.””
She closed her eyes.
That was the answer before she ever spoke.
“You knew.””
Eleanor’s silence was louder than any confession.
Nathan stepped backward.
“You knew.””
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
His voice cracked.
“When I was twenty? Thirty? Forty?””
Eleanor looked devastated.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He pointed toward the hidden room.
“My father said it.””
He pointed toward Victoria’s files.
“Victoria said it.””
“And now you say it.””
Eleanor lowered her head.
“I know how it sounds.””
“No.””
Nathan shook his head.
“You don’t.””
The anger in his voice filled the room.
“Because I spent my entire life believing Richard Cole was my father.””
He looked at the certificate.
“I built my entire identity around that name.””
I stepped closer.
“Nathan…”
He looked at me.
And for a moment, I saw the scared boy hidden behind the powerful man.
The same boy who had lost his mother.
The same boy who had grown up inside a family full of secrets.
“I don’t even know who I am.””
Those words hurt more than anything.
Because I understood.
Five years ago, my entire life had been rewritten without my permission.
Now it was happening to him.
Eleanor walked toward him.
“Your name doesn’t come from blood.””
Nathan stepped away.
“Don’t.””
She stopped.
“You are still my son.””
“But not his.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“You never were.””
Daniel examined the certificate.
“There’s a date here.””
Nathan looked at him.
“What date?””
“The day this document was created.””
Daniel looked up.
“It was made six years ago.””
Nathan frowned.
“Six years?””
“That means someone wanted this information hidden before Grace disappeared.””
I felt a chill.
Someone had been planning this long before Lily was born.
Nathan looked at Eleanor.
“Who was my real father?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation terrified me.
“Mom.””
Eleanor looked at me.
Then at Nathan.
“His name was Thomas Bennett.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Nathan looked confused.
“Bennett?””
Eleanor nodded slowly.
“Grace’s father.””
The room went completely still.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“My father?””
Eleanor looked at me.
“Yes.””
Nathan stared between us.
“You’re saying…”
She nodded.
“Grace and Nathan are connected by family.””
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Eleanor shook her head.
“Not like that.””
She grabbed another file.
“Thomas Bennett was Richard’s business partner before everything fell apart.””
Daniel opened the file.
“So Grace’s father knew Richard?””
“Yes.””
Eleanor looked at Nathan.
“Your real father was Thomas’s brother.””
I felt dizzy.
Nathan and I weren’t related.
But our families were connected.
Deeply.
Dangerously.
“Why hide this?”” Nathan asked.
Eleanor’s face hardened.
“Because Richard built his entire empire by stealing from Thomas’s family.””
Nathan looked at the documents.
“What did he steal?””
“Everything.””
She pointed toward the files.
“Your father’s fortune. His company. His reputation.””
I remembered my own father.
A man I barely knew.
A man who disappeared from my life when I was young.
A man I was told had abandoned us.
But now I wondered.
What else had I been lied about?
Before anyone could speak, Nathan’s phone rang.
He answered.
“Hello?””
His face changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
Then at Lily’s room upstairs.
“Are you sure?””
A pause.
Then:
“Send the results immediately.””
He ended the call.
“What happened?””
Nathan looked shaken.
“The hospital tested Richard’s blood.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“And?””
Nathan swallowed.
“Richard Cole wasn’t the man in the coffin five years ago.””
My heart raced.
“Then who was?””
Nathan looked at the screen.
“They identified the body.””
A pause.
“It was Thomas Bennett.””
The room went silent.
My father.
The man everyone said disappeared.
The man whose name was now connected to Nathan’s birth.
The man who had supposedly died five years ago.
Nathan looked at me.
“Grace…”
But I already knew.
This was no longer about the past.
May you like
Someone had been controlling our lives for years.
And they had just revealed the biggest lie of all.
