The Daughter He Never Knew / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7: The Ghost In The Hallway

“Grace.””

The voice came from the darkness.

Every muscle in my body locked.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it five years ago when Richard Cole stood in my apartment and told me my life was no longer mine.

I had heard it in my nightmares.

But it couldn’t be real.

Richard was in a hospital bed.

Richard was barely alive.

Richard couldn’t be standing inside Nathan’s mansion.

“Mommy!””

Lily’s scream snapped me back.

I ran toward the stairs.

“Nathan!””

I didn’t wait for an answer.

I climbed quickly, my injured shoulder burning with every movement.

When I reached Lily’s room, the door was open.

The window was closed.

The room was empty.

Except for Lily.

She was standing beside her bed, shaking.

I grabbed her.

“Are you hurt?””

She buried her face against me.

“There was a man.””

My heart stopped.

“What man?””

She pointed toward the hallway.

“The old man.””

A cold feeling moved through my entire body.

Nathan rushed into the room seconds later.

“What happened?””

I held Lily tighter.

“Someone was here.””

Security flooded the hallway.

Lights flickered back on.

But there was no one.

No footprints.

No broken windows.

Nothing.

It was like whoever entered had vanished.

Nathan looked at the security team.

“Find him.””

A guard shook his head.

“We checked every entrance. Nobody came inside.””

“That’s impossible.””

Nathan’s voice echoed.

“My daughter saw someone.””

The guard looked uncomfortable.

“Mr. Cole, the cameras went offline exactly when the power failed.””

Daniel arrived behind him.

“That wasn’t a power outage.””

Everyone looked at him.

He held a small device.

“Someone disabled the system.””

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“From where?””

Daniel looked toward the office.

“Inside the house.””

Again.

The same answer.

Someone inside.

Someone who knew the mansion.

Someone who had access.

Victoria appeared at the end of the hallway.

Her face was pale.

“What happened?””

Nathan turned toward her.

“Where were you?””

The question hurt her.

“I was downstairs.””

“Alone?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Are you accusing me?””

Nathan didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Victoria looked at me.

“You think I did this?””

I remembered the hockey stick.

The fake documents.

The lies.

I wanted to believe she was capable of anything.

But something about her face confused me.

She looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

The next morning, Nathan insisted on taking Lily and me somewhere safe.

“Where?””

“My guest house outside the city.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“Grace—”

“I spent five years running.””

My voice softened.

“I’m not running anymore.””

Nathan stared at me.

For a moment, I saw the old Nathan.

The man who used to hold my hand when I was scared.

“You’re stronger than I remember.””

I looked away.

“I had to be.””

Before we could leave, Daniel stopped us.

“I found something.””

He placed a photograph on the table.

It showed the mansion’s basement.

A room I had never seen.

Nathan frowned.

“There’s no basement access.””

Daniel looked at him.

“That’s the problem.””

He pointed at the photograph.

“There is one.””

Nathan’s face changed.

“Where?””

“Behind your father’s old office wall.””

Nobody spoke.

Richard Cole had hidden something inside the house.

Something important.

Something he didn’t want anyone to find.

Nathan grabbed a flashlight.

“I’m going down there.””

“I’m coming.””

He looked at me.

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to decide what truths I can handle anymore.””

For a second, he said nothing.

Then he nodded.

The hidden door was behind a large bookshelf.

A mechanism inside the wall opened with a quiet click.

The basement smelled like dust and old secrets.

We walked down slowly.

At the bottom was a single room.

Inside were boxes.

Files.

Photographs.

And one large metal cabinet.

Nathan opened the first box.

His face changed.

“What?””

He pulled out a folder.

The label was faded.

But I could still read it.

Grace Bennett.

My hands went cold.

Inside were photos of me.

My apartment.

My workplace.

My pregnancy.

Every moment of my life before Lily was born.

Someone had been watching me.

Tracking me.

Planning my disappearance.

Nathan opened another folder.

This one had his name.

Nathan Cole.

Daniel whispered:

“Your father was investigating both of you.””

Nathan looked confused.

“Why?””

Then we heard something.

A sound behind us.

The basement door closing.

Slowly.

We turned.

A shadow stood at the top of the stairs.

Then a voice spoke.

“You finally found the room.””

Nathan raised the flashlight.

The beam hit the person’s face.

And I stopped breathing.

Because it wasn’t Richard.

It wasn’t Victoria.

May you like

It was someone I never expected to see.

Nathan’s mother.
