The Daughter He Never Knew / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: The Final Lie

The folder landed on the table like a weapon.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody breathed.

Richard Cole stood there, alive and calm, looking exactly like the man who had controlled every person in the room for years.

His eyes moved to Nathan.

Then to me.

Then to Lily’s bedroom door.

“You all spent so much time searching for the truth,” Richard said.

His voice was weaker than before, but his confidence remained.

“You never considered the possibility that Grace had her own secrets.””

Nathan stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Richard smiled.

“Still protecting her.””

“I said don’t.””

The anger in Nathan’s voice shook the room.

But Richard only looked amused.

“Open the folder.””

Nobody moved.

“Open it,” he repeated.

I looked at Nathan.

He looked back at me.

There was fear in his eyes.

Not because he believed Richard.

Because he knew Richard was dangerous.

Finally, Daniel picked up the folder.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a DNA report.

The name at the top made my blood freeze.

Lily Bennett.

Nathan Cole.

Richard watched our faces.

“Interesting, isn’t it?””

Nathan grabbed the paper.

His eyes scanned the results.

Then he looked at me.

“Grace?””

I felt the world closing in.

“I don’t understand.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“Of course you don’t.””

I looked at him.

“What did you do?””

“What did I do?””

His smile disappeared.

“You think I created every lie?””

He stepped closer.

“Some lies existed before I ever arrived.””

My hands trembled.

Nathan looked at the report again.

“There’s a mismatch.””

Daniel examined it.

“What?””

Nathan pointed.

“This test says Lily is related to me.””

Everyone froze.

Richard’s expression changed slightly.

“But not as your daughter.””

The room went silent.

My heart stopped.

“What are you saying?””

Richard looked at me.

“You already knew.””

“No.””

“You knew Lily’s biological father wasn’t Nathan.””

The accusation hit like a physical blow.

Nathan looked at me.

And for one terrible second, I saw doubt.

I hated that.

I hated that Richard could still do this.

I stepped forward.

“You’re lying.””

Richard smiled.

“Am I?””

He opened another document.

“This is the original test.””

Daniel took it.

His face changed.

Nathan looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

Daniel swallowed.

“The results are different.””

Nathan stared.

“How?””

Richard leaned back.

“Because someone changed them.””

My mind raced.

Five years.

The pregnancy.

The fear.

The night I disappeared.

Everything came rushing back.

“I never had a DNA test.””

Richard smiled.

“Exactly.””

The room went quiet.

Then Eleanor spoke.

“She did.””

Everyone looked at her.

Eleanor’s face was pale.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

My heart dropped.

“When?””

“The day Lily was born.””

I stared at her.

“You knew?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Richard forced the test.””

Nathan looked furious.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“And you hid this?””

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because the result wasn’t what Richard wanted.””

Richard’s smile faded.

Eleanor continued.

“Lily is Nathan’s daughter.””

The room froze.

Richard’s expression hardened.

“What?””

Eleanor looked directly at him.

“The test you created proved exactly that.””

Nathan grabbed the report.

“Then why the fake one?””

Richard said nothing.

And for the first time, he looked uncertain.

Eleanor answered.

“Because Richard was never trying to prove Lily wasn’t Nathan’s child.””

She looked at me.

“He was trying to convince Nathan to doubt Grace.””

A cold realization moved through me.

The final lie.

Not about Lily.

About trust.

Richard wanted Nathan to question me.

To destroy the family before it could exist.

Nathan looked at Richard.

“You’ve spent years trying to keep us apart.””

Richard’s face twisted.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Nathan stepped forward.

“I understand perfectly.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“You think love fixes everything?””

Nathan shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Lily’s room.

“Truth does.””

For the first time, Richard looked afraid.

Then he reached inside his coat.

Everyone tensed.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a phone.

A video was already playing.

My face appeared on the screen.

Five years earlier.

Me.

Pregnant.

Crying.

And Richard’s voice behind the camera.

“I want the truth recorded.””

My blood turned cold.

Because I remembered that night.

The night everything changed.

The night I thought nobody saw.

May you like

Richard pressed play.

And the video began.
