Chapter 9: The Voice She Lost

The recording crackled.

Static filled the room.

Then came the voice Evelyn had spent twenty years trying to remember.

A voice she thought existed only in childhood dreams.

“Evelyn…”

Her knees almost gave out.

Adrian immediately reached for her arm.

“She’s there.””

Evelyn couldn’t answer.

She couldn’t breathe.

The woman’s voice continued.

“If you’re hearing this, I don’t know how old you are.””

A pause.

A quiet breath.

“Maybe you’re still a child. Maybe you’re already grown.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Her mother sounded real.

Not like a memory.

Not like an old photograph.

Real.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you everything myself.””

The recording continued.

“I wanted to protect you.””

Richard looked away.

Victoria watched Evelyn carefully.

Then the next words came.

“But protecting you became impossible when your father decided the truth was more dangerous than losing everything.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Richard immediately spoke.

“Turn it off.””

Nobody moved.

“Evelyn, listen to me.””

She opened her eyes.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

But firm.

“For once, I’m listening to her.””

The recording continued.

“I discovered what Richard had done.””

A pause.

“I discovered he had stolen from Victoria.””

Victoria lowered her head.

“But that wasn’t the worst part.””

Evelyn felt a chill.

The room seemed smaller.

“The worst part was what he planned to do next.””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

They both understood.

The recording continued.

“He wanted control of Hale International completely.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“That’s enough.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“No.””

He ignored her.

“This is manipulated.””

Daniel shook his head.

“It’s your wife’s voice.””

Richard’s silence was louder than any answer.

The recording continued.

“I found documents proving Richard had created a plan.””

A sound of paper moving.

“He wanted to remove Victoria from the company permanently.””

Evelyn looked at her father.

“Permanently?””

Richard said nothing.

Victoria’s expression changed.

She had known parts of this.

But not all.

The recording continued.

“And when I threatened to expose him…”

The voice became softer.

“I realized he was no longer afraid of losing money.””

Evelyn felt tears forming.

“What was he afraid of?””

The answer came.

“He was afraid of losing Evelyn.””

Everyone went still.

Evelyn looked confused.

“Me?””

Her mother’s voice continued.

“Richard believed that if I told Evelyn the truth, she would leave him.””

The room was silent.

“He believed controlling her was the only way to keep her.””

Evelyn looked down.

Suddenly, every lesson from childhood felt different.

Every warning.

Every rule.

Every time her father told her who to trust.

She remembered.

“Your mother was weak.””

“People only respect power.””

“Never let anyone see you hurt.””

Her father’s voice had shaped her.

And now she wondered why.

The recording continued.

“But there is one thing Richard never knew.””

A pause.

“Evelyn was never his possession.””

Victoria looked at her.

“She was always her own person.””

Evelyn felt tears fall.

Not because of sadness.

Because she finally heard what she needed to hear.

Her mother believed in her.

Then the recording changed.

A different tone.

A final message.

“Evelyn, if Victoria is with you when you hear this…”

Victoria stepped closer.

Her eyes widened.

“Then she kept her promise.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“What promise?””

The recording continued.

“She promised me she would protect you.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

The pain on her face was undeniable.

Evelyn stared.

“You knew.””

Victoria whispered:

“Yes.””

“About the recording?””

“Yes.””

“About my mother’s wishes?””

Victoria nodded.

Evelyn felt betrayed again.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Victoria looked at her.

“Because your mother asked me not to.””

“Why?””

The answer came quietly.

“Because she knew Richard would destroy anyone who tried to take you away from him.””

The room went silent.

Then Evelyn’s phone vibrated.

Everyone looked.

Another unknown message.

This time, there was a photo attached.

Evelyn opened it.

And her face turned pale.

It was a picture of her mother.

Taken years after the day everyone believed she had died.

Alive.

Standing beside someone.

Someone Evelyn recognized.

Someone who had been in the ballroom tonight.

Someone she never expected.

Victoria looked at the photo.

And whispered:

“She survived.””

Evelyn stared at the image.

“Then where has she been all these years?””

Nobody answered.

May you like

Because the next message appeared beneath the photo.

*Your mother is alive. And she wants to see you.*
