Chapter 1: The Woman in Black
“I own everything in this room.””
Evelyn Cross smiled as hundreds of people watched her say it.
The words sounded natural coming from her lips. They were the words she had heard her entire life. Power belonged to her family.
Wealth belonged to her family. Even the future belonged to her family.
The engagement gala had been designed to prove it.
White roses stretched across every table. Crystal chandeliers scattered golden light over the ballroom. Investors, executives, politicians, and celebrities filled the room, raising glasses of champagne beneath banners celebrating the upcoming acquisition of Hale International.
At the center of it all stood Evelyn.
Her silver designer gown shimmered every time she moved. Her diamond necklace had been borrowed from a private collection. Her father, Richard Cross, stood nearby shaking hands with billionaires and board members.
By midnight, everyone believed, the Cross family would own one of the largest corporations in the country.
And Evelyn Cross would become the woman who married the next CEO.
Adrian Vale.
Her fiancé stood near the stage, handsome and composed, surrounded by executives congratulating him.
Evelyn watched him from across the room.
She had spent years building this moment.
Then she saw the woman in black.
The stranger stood near one of the tall windows, speaking quietly with Adrian. She looked completely out of place among the younger guests and wealthy investors. Her black gown was elegant but simple.
Her gray hair was tied back neatly. There were no bodyguards, no assistants, no obvious signs of importance.
Yet Adrian looked nervous.
That was enough to make Evelyn’s smile disappear.
She walked across the ballroom, her heels clicking against the marble floor.
“Adrian,” Evelyn called.
He turned immediately.
“Evelyn—”
“Who is she?””
The older woman calmly looked at her.
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Evelyn, this is—”
“I didn’t ask you,” Evelyn interrupted.
The woman in black studied her with a strange sadness.
“My name is Victoria.””
Evelyn laughed softly.
“Victoria what?””
The woman didn’t answer.
That irritated Evelyn even more.
“You walk into my engagement gala, pull my fiancé away, and refuse to introduce yourself?””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Evelyn, please. This isn’t what you think.””
She looked at him.
“Then explain.””
Before Adrian could speak, Victoria said quietly, “Perhaps you should ask yourself why you feel threatened by a conversation.””
The ballroom went silent around them.
Evelyn stared at her.
“Excuse me?””
Victoria didn’t raise her voice.
“You heard me.””
Richard Cross noticed the scene from across the room and began walking toward them.
“Evelyn,” he warned.
But she ignored him.
“You clearly don’t understand who you’re speaking to.””
Victoria looked around the ballroom.
“No. I understand exactly who I’m speaking to.””
Evelyn smiled coldly.
“My family built this event. My father built the deal. Everyone here is waiting for the Cross family to take control.””
Victoria’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“And you believe that makes you untouchable?””
“Yes.””
The answer came instantly.
A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.
Adrian lowered his voice.
“Evelyn, stop.””
But Evelyn was too angry to listen.
“You should leave before you embarrass yourself.””
Victoria remained still.
“I was invited.””
“By who?””
The older woman looked at Adrian.
That single glance made Evelyn’s anger explode.
She stepped closer.
“You think you can come here and steal attention from me?””
Victoria sighed.
“I never wanted attention.””
“Then why are you still standing here?””
The woman’s silence felt like an insult.
Evelyn’s hand moved before anyone could react.
The slap echoed through the ballroom.
For a moment, nobody breathed.
Victoria’s face turned slightly from the impact.
A thin line of blood appeared on her lip.
The guests stared.
But nobody moved.
Evelyn looked around, expecting support.
Instead, she saw uncertainty.
The woman slowly touched the blood on her mouth.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
Not from pain.
From disappointment.
“You think this room belongs to you?”” Victoria asked.
Evelyn lifted her chin.
“By midnight, it will.””
Adrian suddenly pushed away from his chair.
“Evelyn, stop!””
But she raised her hand again.
This time, Victoria caught her wrist.
The room gasped.
“You really don’t know who you’re attacking,” Victoria whispered.
Evelyn tried to pull away.
“Let go of me.””
Victoria released her.
The sudden movement sent Evelyn stumbling backward.
Her body crashed into a glass vase on the nearby table.
The vase shattered.
White roses scattered across the floor around her silver dress.
The perfect image of Evelyn Cross broke in front of everyone.
Victoria looked at Adrian.
Her voice was calm.
“I am the empire.””
Then she turned toward the stage.
“Remember that.””
And behind Adrian, Richard Cross suddenly froze.
Because he recognized the woman standing in the middle of the ballroom.
Victoria Hale.
The founder of Hale International.
