Chapter 10: The Mother Who Never Left
Evelyn stared at the message until the words blurred.
*Your mother is alive. And she wants to see you.*
For twenty years, she had lived with one certainty.
Her mother was gone.
Dead.
A painful memory from a childhood she barely remembered.
Now that certainty had shattered.
“She’s alive?””
The question came out as a whisper.
Nobody answered immediately.
Victoria looked at the photograph again.
Her expression told Evelyn everything.
She knew.
“You knew she survived.””
It wasn’t a question.
Victoria slowly nodded.
“Yes.””
The room felt colder.
Evelyn stepped back.
“How long?””
Victoria looked down.
“Since the night she disappeared.””
Evelyn laughed once.
A broken, disbelieving sound.
“Since the night she disappeared?””
Her voice rose.
“You knew my mother was alive for twenty years?””
Victoria didn’t defend herself.
That made it worse.
“I made a promise.””
“To her?””
“Yes.””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with anger.
“And what about me?””
The words hit Victoria harder than any accusation.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Victoria looked toward the old recording device.
“Because your mother believed telling you the truth too soon would put you in danger.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Danger from who?””
Silence.
Then Adrian answered.
“Your father.””
Evelyn looked at him.
Even hearing it from someone else felt impossible.
Richard stepped forward.
“You’re all painting me as a monster.””
Everyone turned.
He stood near the doorway, his expression exhausted.
For the first time, he looked older.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just a man watching everything collapse.
Evelyn stared at him.
“Did you know she was alive?””
Richard said nothing.
That was enough.
Her face changed.
“You knew.””
Richard swallowed.
“Evelyn, there are things you don’t understand.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I understand perfectly.””
She walked closer.
“You let me mourn someone who was alive.””
“I was protecting you.””
The sentence made her stop.
Because it was the same excuse he had used her entire life.
Protecting you.
Helping you.
Doing what was best.
But every time, it meant taking away her choice.
“You don’t get to call that protection anymore.””
Richard looked hurt.
“Evelyn.””
“No.””
She wiped away a tear.
“You didn’t protect me.””
She pointed at the recording.
“You protected yourself.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Evelyn looked at Victoria.
“Where is she?””
Victoria hesitated.
“I don’t know.””
Evelyn froze.
“What?””
“She contacted me through intermediaries.””
“Why?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of my father?””
Victoria nodded.
“But recently, she decided hiding was no longer enough.””
Evelyn looked at the photograph.
Her mother was alive.
Waiting.
“I want to see her.””
Richard immediately reacted.
“No.””
Everyone noticed.
Evelyn turned slowly.
“No?””
Richard realized his mistake.
“I mean… you don’t know what you’re walking into.””
She stared at him.
“Neither did you when you destroyed her life.””
The words silenced him.
Daniel stepped forward.
“There’s something else.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“What?””
He pulled out another document from the metal box.
“This was hidden beneath the recording.””
Victoria took it.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then her expression changed.
“What is it?””
Victoria looked at Evelyn.
“It’s a transfer agreement.””
“For what?””
Victoria hesitated.
Then answered.
“For your inheritance.””
Evelyn frowned.
“My inheritance?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your mother created a trust before she disappeared.””
Richard looked alarmed.
“She couldn’t have.””
Victoria turned toward him.
“She did.””
Evelyn took the paper.
Her eyes scanned the document.
A company name appeared.
A company she had never heard of.
Then she saw the ownership percentage.
Her hands went cold.
Because the document revealed something impossible.
Her mother had not left her money.
She had left her control.
May you like
And the company she inherited was not a small business.
It was a controlling stake in Hale International.
