Chapter 2: The Empire Strikes Back
The ballroom changed in a single second.
A moment earlier, people had been watching Evelyn Cross fall.
Now they were watching Richard Cross lose the color in his face.
“Impossible,” Richard whispered.
Victoria looked at him.
“No, Richard.””
Her voice carried through the silent room.
“Just inconvenient.””
The investors around them began murmuring.
Adrian stared between his fiancée and the woman in black.
“Victoria Hale?””
The name spread through the ballroom like a shockwave.
Everyone knew the legend.
Victoria Hale had founded Hale International from a small technology company and transformed it into a global empire. Five years earlier, she stepped away from public appearances, leaving executives to manage daily operations.
Rumors claimed she had sold her shares.
Rumors claimed she had lost control.
Rumors were wrong.
Evelyn slowly stood among the broken roses.
Her face was pale.
“No…”
Victoria looked at her.
“Yes.””
Evelyn’s confidence disappeared.
“You’re the founder?””
Victoria walked closer.
“I am the founder.””
She glanced around the ballroom.
“And I am the majority owner.””
Richard immediately stepped forward.
“Victoria, let’s not create a scene.””
She looked at him.
“A scene?””
Her eyes moved toward the blood on her lip.
“You allowed your daughter to attack me in front of your business partners.””
Richard forced a smile.
“She was under pressure.””
Victoria’s expression did not change.
“Pressure does not create cruelty. It reveals it.””
The cameras began appearing.
Several reporters who had been invited to cover the acquisition lifted their phones.
Evelyn noticed.
Her panic grew.
“Everyone, please,” she said quickly.
“This was a misunderstanding.””
Adrian looked at her.
“A misunderstanding?””
She turned toward him.
“Adrian, you know me.””
He stared silently.
“You know I would never intentionally disrespect someone.””
Victoria almost smiled.
“Interesting.””
She reached into her purse.
Everyone watched as she pulled out a small remote.
Richard’s face changed.
“Victoria.””
She pressed the button.
The massive screen behind the stage flickered.
The romantic photographs of Evelyn and Adrian disappeared.
The engagement announcement vanished.
The ballroom became dark for one second.
Then documents appeared.
Bank records.
Transfer histories.
Company names.
Millions of dollars moving through accounts connected to Cross family businesses.
The room erupted.
“What is this?””
“Are those real?””
“Richard, explain yourself.””
Richard stepped toward the screen.
“These documents are misleading.””
Victoria calmly watched.
“Are they?””
Another button.
The screen changed again.
Security footage appeared.
A timestamp.
2:13 a.m.
Adrian’s private office.
Everyone watched as Evelyn entered the room alone.
She looked around.
Then she opened a locked cabinet.
She removed confidential files.
She photographed documents.
She sent them to someone.
The ballroom went completely silent.
Adrian watched the footage without blinking.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
“You went through my office?””
Evelyn’s lips trembled.
“Adrian, listen to me.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
That made it worse.
“You stole from me.””
“I was helping my father.””
Richard turned sharply.
“Don’t put this on me.””
Evelyn looked at him in disbelief.
“Dad?””
“You made the decision.””
The betrayal happened instantly.
Father against daughter.
Daughter against fiancé.
The perfect family image collapsed in front of hundreds of witnesses.
Victoria watched without satisfaction.
Only disappointment.
“You spent years building a beautiful lie,” she said.
“Unfortunately, lies have one weakness.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“What?””
Victoria stepped closer.
“They leave evidence.””
Then every phone in the ballroom began ringing.
One after another.
Executives checked messages.
Board members whispered.
Richard’s assistant rushed toward him, terrified.
“Mr. Cross…”
Richard turned.
“What?””
The assistant swallowed.
“The acquisition vote has been suspended.””
Richard froze.
“By who?””
The assistant looked toward Victoria.
“By her.””
Evelyn stared at the woman she had slapped.
For the first time that night, she understood.
She had not humiliated a stranger.
She had attacked the only person powerful enough to destroy everything.
But Victoria wasn’t finished.
She looked at Adrian.
“There is something else you need to know.””
Adrian frowned.
“What?””
Victoria handed him a folder.

And when he opened it, his expression changed completely.
Because inside was proof that the betrayal started long before tonight.
