Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Engagement
Adrian didn’t open the folder immediately.
He stared at it as if the papers inside could somehow change shape.
The ballroom waited.
Everyone wanted to know what could possibly be worse.
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Adrian, don’t listen to her.””
He looked at her.
“Why?””
The question hurt more than anger.
“Because you already believe I’m guilty.””
Adrian held her gaze.
“I saw you stealing my company’s information.””
“I was trying to protect my family.””
“From what?””
Evelyn opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Victoria watched quietly.
She had no need to attack.
The truth was doing the damage for her.
Adrian finally opened the folder.
The first page was a financial report.
The second was a series of emails.
The third was a signed agreement.
His hands tightened.
“No.””
Evelyn’s expression changed.
“What?””
Adrian looked at Richard.
“You knew.””
Richard looked away.
“Adrian, let me explain.””
“No.””
The word came out cold.
“You knew my company was being targeted.””
Richard tried to stay calm.
“Business is complicated.””
Victoria interrupted.
“No. Greed is complicated. Business is simple.””
The reporters moved closer.
Evelyn looked around desperately.
The guests who had admired her an hour ago now watched her like she was a stranger.
She hated that feeling.
She hated losing control.
“You’re enjoying this,” Evelyn said to Victoria.
The older woman looked surprised.
“No.””
“You ruined my life.””
Victoria’s expression softened.
“No, Evelyn.””
She pointed toward the screen.
“You built a life that could only survive if nobody looked closely.””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with anger.
“You think you’re better than me?””
Victoria paused.
Then she answered honestly.
“I think I know what happens when people confuse privilege with power.””
The words struck harder than a scream.
Richard stepped forward.
“This is enough.””
Victoria looked at him.
“Is it?””
She pressed the remote again.
The screen changed.
Not another bank record.
Not another video.
A photograph.
A younger Victoria.
Standing beside a man.
Richard Cross.
The room gasped.
Evelyn looked confused.
“What is that?””
Nobody answered.
Victoria looked at Richard.
“You never told your daughter, did you?””
Richard’s face turned pale.
“Victoria, don’t.””
Evelyn slowly looked between them.
“What is she talking about?””
Victoria walked toward the center of the ballroom.
“The reason your father wanted Hale International was not because of money.””
Richard’s voice became desperate.
“Stop.””
“It was because he believed taking this company would erase what happened twenty years ago.””
Evelyn’s heart started beating faster.
“What happened?””
Victoria looked at her.
And for the first time that night, Evelyn saw something unexpected in her eyes.
Not anger.
Pain.
“Your father and I built something together.””
Richard shook his head.
“That was a long time ago.””
“Yes,” Victoria said.
“And you betrayed me.””
The ballroom went silent again.
Evelyn stared at her father.
“Betrayed you how?””
Richard said nothing.
Victoria answered.
“He didn’t just try to steal my company.””
She looked directly at Evelyn.
“He helped destroy my family.””
The words hung in the air.
Adrian slowly lowered the folder.
“Evelyn…”
She looked at him.
“What?””
His expression was filled with confusion.
Because the documents he had just read contained one final name.
A name connected to the beginning of everything.
A name Evelyn recognized.
Her own.
Victoria stepped closer.
“Before tonight ends, Evelyn, you’re going to learn why your father needed this engagement more than you ever did.””
Evelyn stared at her.
“What are you saying?””
Victoria reached into the folder and pulled out one final document.
Then she placed it on the table.
And the moment Evelyn saw the signature at the bottom, her entire world stopped.

Because the person who had started this war was not Victoria Hale.
It was someone Evelyn had trusted her entire life.
