Chapter 5: The Witness Returns

The ballroom fell silent as the stranger entered.

Evelyn recognized him immediately.

Not because she knew him.

Because she had seen his photograph before.

In her father’s old office.

A photograph Richard kept hidden inside a locked drawer.

The man was older now.

His hair was gray.

His face carried years of exhaustion.

But Evelyn knew that expression.

Her father had looked terrified of this man.

“Who is he?”” Adrian asked.

Victoria didn’t answer immediately.

She watched the man walk toward her.

“Daniel.””

The man stopped beside her.

“Victoria.””

Their voices were quiet.

Almost emotional.

For a moment, Evelyn saw something she never expected.

Pain between two people who had once trusted each other.

Richard stepped forward.

“You have no right to be here.””

Daniel looked at him.

“That’s exactly what you said twenty years ago.””

Richard’s face darkened.

“Leave.””

Daniel ignored him.

Instead, he looked at Evelyn.

“You’re Richard’s daughter?””

She hesitated.

“Yes.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology confused her.

“For what?””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“For not coming back sooner.””

The room became colder.

Evelyn looked between them.

“What happened?””

Victoria answered.

“Daniel was my chief financial officer.””

Richard laughed.

“Your failed employee?””

Daniel looked at him.

“The employee who discovered you were moving company assets into private accounts.””

A wave of shock moved through the crowd.

Evelyn turned toward her father.

“Is that true?””

Richard’s expression changed.

“Don’t believe everything you hear.””

Daniel pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept copies.””

Richard’s confidence disappeared.

Victoria accepted the envelope.

Inside were old documents.

Original contracts.

Transfer records.

Evidence from twenty years ago.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Your father didn’t just take money.””

He paused.

“He blamed Victoria for his own actions.””

Evelyn stared.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“When the accounts were discovered, Richard created fake records showing Victoria had approved the transfers.””

Adrian looked shocked.

“That would have destroyed her.””

Daniel nodded.

“It almost did.””

Victoria looked away.

For the first time, Evelyn noticed something.

The powerful woman everyone feared wasn’t enjoying revenge.

She was remembering something painful.

Richard pointed at Daniel.

“You’re lying.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“I waited twenty years for you to say that.””

He handed another document to Adrian.

“This is the original report.””

Adrian read it.

Then his face changed.

“Richard…”

Evelyn watched him.

“What does it say?””

Adrian slowly lowered the paper.

“It says your father tried to force Victoria out of her own company.””

Richard snapped.

“Enough!””

His voice shook.

Everyone noticed.

Because powerful people rarely shouted when they were in control.

They shouted when they were losing it.

Evelyn took a step back.

Her entire identity was built around her father’s image.

The brilliant businessman.

The respected billionaire.

The perfect example.

Now she saw the cracks.

“You knew,” she whispered.

Richard looked at her.

“Evelyn.””

“You knew all along.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Not about this. About everything.””

Her voice became louder.

“You taught me that people without money didn’t matter.””

The ballroom went silent.

“You taught me that winning was the only thing that mattered.””

Richard tried to interrupt.

“I taught you how to survive.””

“No.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You taught me how to become you.””

The words hit him.

Even Victoria looked surprised.

Then Evelyn’s phone vibrated.

Everyone looked toward her.

She checked the screen.

Her face changed.

“What is it?”” Adrian asked.

She didn’t answer.

Because the message came from an unknown number.

One sentence.

*You think your father is the villain? Ask Victoria why she never told you about your mother.*

Evelyn slowly looked up.

Victoria saw the message.

May you like

And for the first time tonight…

Victoria looked afraid.
