Chapter 11: The Heir Nobody Knew
The silence after the revelation felt heavier than shouting.
Evelyn stared at the document.
A controlling stake.
Hale International.
The company her father had spent years trying to acquire.
The company that had caused everything.
“You’re saying…”
Her voice barely worked.
“My mother owned part of Hale International?””
Victoria nodded.
“More than part.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“How much?””
Victoria answered quietly.
“Thirty-eight percent.””
Adrian looked stunned.
“Your mother was one of the largest shareholders?””
“Yes.””
Daniel added:
“And Richard knew.””
Evelyn turned toward her father.
The anger in her eyes was different now.
Not explosive.
Not emotional.
Something colder.
“You knew.””
Richard looked away.
“I knew she had shares.””
“You knew?””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“You knew my mother built something.””
Richard remained silent.
“And you still told me she was nobody.””
His expression tightened.
“She left.””
“No.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“She survived.””
She held up the document.
“And she trusted me with what she built.””
Richard’s voice became defensive.
“She abandoned you.””
The words hung in the air.
Evelyn froze.
For years, that had been the wound he touched whenever she questioned him.
Your mother left.
Your mother chose to leave.
Your mother didn’t come back.
But now she knew.
It was never the truth.
Victoria stepped between them.
“Richard, enough.””
He looked at her.
“You think you understand everything?””
“No.””
Victoria’s voice was calm.
“I understand one thing.””
She looked at Evelyn.
“She was a child.””
The words broke something inside Evelyn.
Because nobody had ever said that.
Nobody had ever admitted she had been the one who needed protection.
Not power.
Not control.
Just protection.
Adrian moved closer.
“Evelyn.””
She looked at him.
“I don’t know who I am anymore.””
His expression softened.
“Yes, you do.””
She shook her head.
“My whole life was built around my father.””
Adrian looked at Richard.
“No.””
He looked back at her.
“Your father built a story around you.””
The words stayed with her.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered quickly.
His face changed.
“What?””
Everyone watched.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“She’s moving.””
Victoria stood immediately.
“Where?””
Daniel hesitated.
“She wants Evelyn to come alone.””
“No.””
Adrian immediately shook his head.
“Absolutely not.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“She’s my mother.””
“I know.””
“She’s been waiting twenty years.””
Adrian lowered his voice.
“That’s exactly why this is dangerous.””
Victoria agreed.
“Your mother would not ask you to come alone unless she believed it was necessary.””
Richard suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at him.
“You’re all walking into a trap.””
Evelyn stared.
“Why?””
Richard looked at Victoria.
“Because you never asked the most important question.””
Victoria frowned.
“What question?””
Richard smiled faintly.
“The question of why she disappeared.””
The room went silent.
Evelyn looked at him.
“You said she was afraid of you.””
Richard shook his head.
“That’s what you want to believe.””
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“Richard.””
But he continued.
“Ask Victoria what happened the night your mother vanished.””
Evelyn turned.
“Victoria?””
For the first time, Victoria didn’t immediately answer.
And that frightened Evelyn more than anything.
“Tell me.””
Victoria closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“The night your mother disappeared…”
She paused.
“I was there.””
Evelyn felt her heart stop.
“You were there?””
Victoria nodded.
“And I wasn’t the person who saved her.””
May you like
The room went quiet.
“I was the reason she had to run.””
