Chapter 13: The Reunion After Twenty Years
The old warehouse stood at the edge of the city.
Abandoned.
Silent.
A place where nobody would look for a woman who had disappeared for twenty years.
Evelyn stepped out of the car and stared at the building.
Her hands were shaking.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she was about to meet the person she had spent half her life mourning.
Victoria stood beside her.
Adrian was a few steps behind.
Richard remained inside the car.
For once, he had no control.
“Are you ready?”” Adrian asked softly.
Evelyn looked at the warehouse door.
“No.””
She swallowed.
“But I don’t think I ever will be.””
Victoria approached her.
“Evelyn.””
She turned.
“I need you to know something.””
“What?””
“Your mother never stopped loving you.””
The words hurt.
Because some part of Evelyn had always feared the opposite.
That maybe Richard had been right.
Maybe she had been abandoned.
Maybe she wasn’t worth staying for.
Victoria touched her shoulder.
“She carried your picture everywhere.””
Evelyn looked down.
“Then why didn’t she come home?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
Because the answer was complicated.
Before Evelyn could ask again, the warehouse door opened.
Everyone froze.
A woman stood in the doorway.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
Evelyn forgot how to breathe.
She knew those eyes.
Not because of photographs.
Because they were her own.
The woman covered her mouth.
“Evelyn.””
The sound of her name broke something inside her.
Twenty years of anger.
Twenty years of questions.
Twenty years of pretending she didn’t care.
All disappeared.
“Mom?””
The word came out like a child’s cry.
The woman stepped forward.
Then stopped.
As if afraid Evelyn would disappear.
“I’m sorry.””
Evelyn stared.
That was all she had imagined hearing.
Not explanations.
Not excuses.
Just that.
Sorry.
Her mother began crying.
“I wanted to come back.””
Evelyn’s voice trembled.
“Then why didn’t you?””
The woman looked down.
“Because every time I tried, Richard made sure I believed I would destroy your life.””
Evelyn looked away.
“He told me you left.””
Her mother closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“He told me you chose to disappear.””
“I know.””
“He told me you didn’t want me.””
The woman broke.
“No.””
She stepped forward.
“I wanted you more than anything.””
The tears finally came.
Evelyn didn’t remember moving.
One moment she was standing there.
The next, she was in her mother’s arms.
The hug felt unfamiliar.
But somehow natural.
Like a missing piece returning.
“I’m sorry,” her mother whispered.
Evelyn cried.
“I hated you.””
“I know.””
“I missed you.””
“I know.””
“I thought you forgot me.””
Her mother held her tighter.
“Never.””
Behind them, Victoria looked away, giving them privacy.
Adrian watched quietly.
Richard remained in the car.
Watching.
But not entering.
After several minutes, Evelyn pulled back.
She wiped her tears.
“Why now?””
Her mother looked serious.
“Because Richard lost control.””
Evelyn frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means he can no longer hide what he did.””
She looked toward Victoria.
“And because I finally have proof.””
Evelyn’s expression changed.
“Proof?””
Her mother nodded.
“Not just against Richard.””
She looked at Victoria.
“Against everyone involved.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“What are you saying?””
The woman reached into her coat and pulled out a small drive.
“I kept a copy of the original files.””
Daniel immediately recognized it.
“The evidence.””
“Yes.””
Evelyn looked confused.
“But Victoria already exposed him.””
Her mother shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone became still.
“She exposed the crimes Richard committed against Hale International.””
She looked at Evelyn.
“But she doesn’t know the entire truth.””
Victoria’s face changed.
“What don’t I know?””
The woman looked at her.
“The night I disappeared…”
She paused.
“You weren’t the only person Richard betrayed.””
Victoria went silent.
Evelyn looked between them.
“What happened?””
Her mother tightened her grip on the drive.
“Richard didn’t act alone.””
A cold feeling moved through the group.
“Who helped him?””
The woman looked directly at Victoria.
And answered:
“Someone inside Hale International.””
Victoria froze.
Because there was only one person who had access to everything.
May you like
One person she had trusted.
One person she never suspected.
