Chapter 7: The Letter From the Past
Evelyn read the first sentence again.
Then again.
Her fingers trembled around the paper.
The ballroom disappeared.
The voices.
The cameras.
The people watching her.
Everything faded until there was only the letter.
*“Evelyn, if you are reading this, it means your father failed to keep the secret I died protecting.””*
Her heart slammed against her chest.
“My father?””
The words escaped her lips.
Richard immediately stepped forward.
“Give me that letter.””
Evelyn pulled it away.
“No.””
The single word surprised everyone.
Richard stopped.
Because Evelyn had never said no to him.
Not once.
“Evelyn,” he said carefully, “you don’t understand what you’re reading.””
She looked at him.
“Then explain.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was the answer.
Victoria watched silently.
Adrian stood beside Evelyn, his expression filled with concern.
“Read the rest,” he whispered.
Evelyn looked back down.
The handwriting was elegant.
Familiar somehow.
Even though she had never seen it before.
*“I spent years trying to protect you from the truth. I wanted you to grow up believing your father loved you more than his ambition.””*
Evelyn’s breathing became uneven.
A memory appeared.
Her childhood.
Her father standing in the doorway.
Telling her that her mother was gone.
Telling her some people were not meant to stay.
Telling her they had to become stronger.
She had believed him.
For twenty years.
*“But love does not control. Love does not isolate. Love does not erase another person’s existence.””*
Evelyn slowly looked at Richard.
His face had lost all confidence.
“What did you do?””
The ballroom became completely silent.
Richard lowered his voice.
“Evelyn, this is not the place.””
She laughed bitterly.
“You made it this place.””
She pointed around them.
“You invited hundreds of people here to celebrate your victory.””
Her voice shook.
“So now everyone gets to see the truth.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
Victoria stepped closer.
“Your mother discovered what Richard was doing with Hale International.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“And?””
Victoria hesitated.
“She wanted to tell the authorities.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“That’s enough.””
But nobody listened.
Victoria continued.
“She found the financial records. She knew he had manipulated company accounts and framed me.””
Evelyn looked at the letter.
The words suddenly felt heavier.
“What happened after she found out?””
Nobody answered.
That frightened her more.
Daniel finally spoke.
“Your mother disappeared three days after confronting Richard.””
Evelyn turned toward him.
“You said disappeared.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“Not died?””
Silence.
The entire room held its breath.
Richard stepped forward.
“She died.””
Evelyn stared at him.
“You told me that.””
“Because it was true.””
Victoria looked at Richard.
“Was it?””
The question cut through the room.
Evelyn looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Victoria’s eyes filled with sadness.
“It means your father never showed you the complete story.””
Richard’s voice became sharp.
“Be careful.””
Victoria ignored the warning.
“Your mother left behind evidence.””
Evelyn felt cold.
“What evidence?””
Victoria looked toward the screen behind them.
The one that had exposed the financial crimes.
“There was a final recording.””
Richard’s face changed instantly.
Everyone saw it.
Adrian saw it.
Evelyn saw it.
The fear.
The panic.
“What recording?”” Evelyn asked.
Richard moved toward the exit.
Nobody missed it.
Victoria spoke calmly.
“The one your father spent twenty years trying to find.””
Richard stopped.
The ballroom doors remained closed.
Security guards had quietly moved into position.
Not to threaten him.
To prevent him from escaping.
Evelyn stared at her father.
“You knew.””
Richard turned around.
“I knew what?””
“That she left something behind.””
His silence answered.
Evelyn felt something inside her break.
Not because her father had lied.
She had already accepted that.
Because she realized the truth was worse.
He had built her entire life around a lie.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed after hearing only a few words.
Victoria noticed.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“The recording has been found.””
The room erupted.
Richard went completely still.
“Where?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he answered.
“In the place nobody thought to look.””
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“Where?””
May you like
Daniel looked at her.
“At your childhood home.””
