Chapter 8: The Witness Who Knew Too Much

Richard refused to say the name until we left the station.

He waited until we were standing outside under the harsh white lights.

The night air felt heavy.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

Richard looked at the paper again.

“Michael Carter.””

I frowned.

“Who is that?””

Richard looked toward the parking lot.

“My wife’s brother.””

I felt confused.

“Lily’s uncle?””

He nodded.

“But I haven’t seen him in years.””

“Why would he sign this?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Because neither of us knew.

The next morning, Richard called Michael.

He answered after three rings.

“Richard?””

His voice sounded surprised.

“Why are you calling me?””

Richard didn’t waste time.

“Did you sign guardianship papers involving Lily?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then:

“Where did you get those?””

Richard’s expression changed.

“You did.””

Michael sighed.

“I can explain.””

I stood beside Richard, listening.

“Explain what?”” Richard asked.

“That Angela told me Lily wasn’t safe.””

My stomach tightened.

Richard looked at me.

“Safe from who?””

Another pause.

“From Vanessa.””

The accusation still hurt.

Even though I knew it wasn’t true.

Richard’s voice became colder.

“You believed her?””

“She showed me evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“I don’t know.””

Richard stopped walking.

“What do you mean you don’t know?””

Michael sounded uncomfortable.

“She said she had photos and reports.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“She lied to you.””

“I didn’t know that.””

“No. You didn’t ask.””

The call ended shortly after.

But something about Michael’s reaction bothered me.

Angela wasn’t just manipulating me.

She wasn’t just stealing money.

She had been building a network of people who believed her story.

People who thought they were saving Lily.

When we arrived home, Lily was sitting at the kitchen table coloring.

She looked up when Richard entered.

“Daddy?””

He smiled.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

She held up her drawing.

It was a picture of three people.

Richard.

Lily.

And me.

My throat tightened.

“You drew me?””

She nodded slowly.

“You’re still my family.””

I almost broke.

After everything I had done.

After everything she had been through.

She still saw me as family.

Richard noticed the drawing.

He looked at me.

And for a second, there was something softer in his eyes.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But something.

Then the doorbell rang.

We all froze.

Richard walked to the front door.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Serious.

Michael.

Richard opened the door.

“What are you doing here?””

Michael looked past him.

At Lily.

His expression changed.

Guilt.

“I need to talk.””

Richard stepped outside.

“No.””

“Richard—”

“You helped someone try to take my daughter.””

Michael looked down.

“I thought I was helping her.””

“You didn’t even know the truth.””

Michael looked at me.

“That’s why I’m here.””

I stepped closer.

“What do you mean?””

Michael reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out an envelope.

“I found this at Angela’s house.””

Richard took it.

“What is it?””

Michael looked nervous.

“Something she didn’t want anyone to see.””

Richard opened the envelope.

Inside was a copy of an email.

The sender was Angela.

The recipient was someone named “J. Wallace.””

I read the first line.

My blood ran cold.

*The plan is working. Richard believes Vanessa is the problem.*

I looked at Richard.

He kept reading.

The email continued.

*Once custody is transferred, the trust funds will become accessible.*

Richard’s hands tightened around the paper.

“She wasn’t trying to help Lily.””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

Richard looked up.

“She wanted the money.””

But then he reached the bottom of the email.

And his face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

He handed me the paper.

At the bottom was one sentence.

A sentence that made my heart stop.

*And after Richard loses custody, Vanessa will take the blame for everything.*

The three of us stood there silently.

Because Angela’s plan was finally clear.

She wasn’t trying to save Lily.

She was trying to destroy both of us.

And then my phone rang.

The caller ID appeared.

Angela.
