Chapter 4: The File Hidden in the Drawer

Richard stood frozen in our bedroom doorway.

The folder trembled slightly in his hand.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he was trying to understand how the woman he married could have planned something so cruel.

“Why?”” he asked again.

One word.

But it carried years of trust collapsing in a single moment.

I couldn’t look at him.

The papers inside the folder suddenly felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.””

Richard laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“You keep saying that.””

He opened the folder again.

“First, you take my daughter’s money.””

He turned the page.

“Then you try to send her away.””

Another page.

“And now I find documents asking the court to remove me as her father.””

His eyes met mine.

“Vanessa, what exactly were you trying to do?””

I swallowed.

“I was trying to protect my family.””

Richard stared at me.

“Your family?””

The way he said it made me realize what I had done.

I had separated us.

Me and my children.

Richard and Lily.

Like we were competing teams.

“I thought Lily needed professional help,” I whispered.

“She needed her father.””

“She was struggling.””

“No. She was grieving.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“You knew that.””

I looked away.

Because I did know.

I remembered the first night Lily came to live with us permanently.

She had stood in the doorway holding her mother’s old blanket.

She was six years old.

She looked at me and asked:

“Are you going to leave too?””

Back then, I hugged her.

I promised I wouldn’t.

But somewhere along the way, I became the person she needed protection from.

Richard sat on the edge of the bed.

“Who helped you file this?””

I stayed silent.

His eyes narrowed.

“Vanessa.””

“I talked to someone.””

“Who?””

“A lawyer.””

“What lawyer?””

I hesitated.

And that hesitation told him everything.

“You didn’t even choose someone random, did you?””

I said nothing.

Richard stood.

“Who?””

Finally, I whispered the name.

“Angela.””

His expression changed.

My sister.

Angela had always been the person who told me what I wanted to hear.

When I complained about Lily getting attention, Angela agreed.

When I said Richard was too focused on his daughter, Angela supported me.

“She understood me,” I said.

Richard shook his head.

“No. She encouraged you.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

Both of us looked down.

A message appeared.

From Angela.

*Did he find the papers?*

My stomach dropped.

Richard saw it.

He reached for my phone.

I didn’t stop him.

There was nothing left to hide.

He read the message.

Then another.

And another.

His face grew darker with every word.

“She knew about this?””

I whispered:

“Yes.””

Richard scrolled.

“She helped you move money?””

I didn’t answer.

That was enough.

He looked at me like he didn’t recognize me.

“You had someone helping you steal from my daughter.””

“I didn’t steal.””

“Forty thousand dollars disappeared.””

“I was going to return it.””

“When?””

Again, silence.

Richard closed his eyes.

Then we heard a small voice behind us.

“Daddy?””

We turned.

Lily stood in the doorway.

She had tears on her cheeks.

“How long were you going to send me away?””

Richard immediately walked toward her.

“Never.””

“But Vanessa said—”

“I don’t care what she said.””

He knelt down.

“You are my daughter. You belong here.””

Lily looked at me.

And that look hurt.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Just sadness.

“Did you hate me?””

My chest tightened.

“No.””

“Then why?””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because the truth sounded horrible.

I was jealous of a child.

A child who had already lost her mother.

Richard held Lily close.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

“Hello?””

His face changed.

“What?””

I watched him listen.

Then slowly stand.

“Are you sure?””

A pause.

“No. I’m coming there.””

He ended the call.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Richard grabbed his keys.

“The bank found something.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

He looked at the folder.

“The trust account wasn’t just accessed from one place.””

He walked toward the door.

“Someone changed the account permissions.””

I felt cold.

“Who?””

Richard looked back at me.

“The records show a new authorized user was added.””

A long silence followed.

Then he said the name.

May you like

And my entire body went numb.

“Vanessa.””
