Chapter 10: The Courtroom Where Everything Changed
The courtroom was smaller than I expected.
I had imagined something dramatic.
A room full of people.
A judge who looked angry.
Someone shouting the truth until everyone understood.
But reality was quieter.
And somehow, that made it worse.
Every whisper felt loud.
Every glance felt like judgment.
I sat beside Richard at the front of the courtroom.
Across from us sat Angela.
She looked calm.
Perfectly dressed.
Perfectly prepared.
Like she had never betrayed anyone.
Like she hadn’t spent months destroying my family.
Her attorney leaned over and whispered something to her.
She smiled.
That smile made my stomach turn.
The judge entered.
Everyone stood.
Then the hearing began.
Angela’s attorney stood first.
“Your Honor, this case concerns the safety of a young child who has been placed in an unstable environment.””
I felt my hands tighten.
Unstable.
That was the word they were using for me.
The attorney continued.
“Mrs. Anderson has demonstrated poor judgment, financial irresponsibility, and emotional instability.””
Richard looked at me.
I could see the conflict on his face.
Because some of it was true.
Not the lies.
Not the accusations.
But my mistakes.
My jealousy.
My choices.
The things I wished I could take back.
The attorney held up documents.
“Evidence shows unauthorized access to the child’s trust account.””
The courtroom became silent.
The judge looked at me.
“Mrs. Anderson, is that accurate?””
My mouth went dry.
I stood.
“Yes.””
A wave of whispers moved through the room.
Richard looked down.
I continued.
“But there is more to the story.””
The judge nodded.
“You will have your opportunity.””
I sat down.
Angela’s attorney smiled slightly.
They wanted me to admit everything.
Because they thought my honesty would destroy me.
Then Richard’s attorney stood.
“Your Honor, the financial activity did occur. However, new evidence shows another person had access to the account.””
He handed over documents.
The judge reviewed them.
Angela’s expression changed slightly.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
She was worried.
The attorney continued.
“There were multiple logins, transfers, and documents created without Mr. Anderson’s authorization.””
Angela’s attorney immediately objected.
“Speculation.””
“We have bank records.””
The judge looked through the papers.
Then looked at Angela.
“Ms. Carter, are you connected to these transactions?””
Angela stood calmly.
“I was trying to protect my niece.””
The judge raised an eyebrow.
“By accessing her financial account?””
“I had concerns.””
“Did you have legal authorization?””
Angela hesitated.
Only briefly.
But it was enough.
The judge noticed.
“Answer the question.””
“No.””
The room went quiet.
I looked at Richard.
For the first time, Angela looked less confident.
Then her attorney changed direction.
“But Your Honor, regardless of financial issues, Mrs. Anderson admitted she wanted Lily removed from the home.””
My heart dropped.
The judge looked at me.
“Is that true?””
I stood slowly.
“I had thoughts I am ashamed of.””
Richard looked at me.
I continued.
“But thoughts are not actions.””
The attorney approached.
“Did you tell Lily she might be sent away?””
“Yes.””
“Did you apply for a boarding school?””
“Yes.””
“Did you use her money?””
“Yes.””
Each answer hurt.
But I refused to hide.
The attorney turned toward the judge.
“No further questions.””
I sat down.
My entire body felt exhausted.
Then Richard stood.
His attorney looked surprised.
“Mr. Anderson?””
Richard walked forward.
The judge allowed him to speak.
He looked at me first.
Then at Lily.
Then at the judge.
“I need to say something.””
The courtroom became silent.
“I married Vanessa because I believed she was someone who cared about my daughter.””
I looked down.
“Somewhere along the way, she lost sight of that.””
My eyes burned.
But Richard continued.
“She made serious mistakes.””
Angela smiled.
Until he finished.
“But mistakes do not erase the truth.””
Angela’s smile faded.
Richard turned toward the judge.
“My wife hurt my daughter emotionally. I will not pretend otherwise.””
My heart broke.
Then he continued.
“But Angela Carter manipulated those mistakes.””
He held up the email.
“She didn’t want to protect Lily.””
The judge reviewed the evidence.
“She wanted access to Lily’s trust.””
Angela’s attorney objected.
“Your Honor—”
But the judge raised a hand.
“Let him finish.””
Richard looked directly at Angela.
“She used my wife’s weakness to create a story.””
The courtroom was silent.
Then Angela stood.
“You’re defending her?””
Richard looked at her.
“No.””
His voice was steady.
“I’m defending the truth.””
For the first time, Angela looked angry.
Not hurt.
Not concerned.
Angry.
The hearing continued for another hour.
Then the judge made a temporary decision.
No custody transfer.
No removal of Lily.
But an investigation would continue.
As everyone stood, I thought it was over.
Until my attorney received a message.
She read it.
Then her face changed.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Vanessa…”
My stomach dropped.
“What happened?””
She handed me her phone.
A new document had been filed.
Not by Angela.
Not by her attorney.
By someone else.
And at the top of the page was a name I recognized.
May you like
Someone who had been silent until now.
*Richard Anderson.*
